This story has a weird feel to it. Not sure why. I hope she is home soon.

The girl's family said: "We honestly believe that Kacie is being held against her will, possibly even being drugged, and no doubt is being exploited sexually"

How is this known?? Again, I hope she is safe, but something is odd about all this.
I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

Agreed. The whole deal about the "friend" who said he dropped her off then changed his story is very suspect. They should be grilling that guy right now.

And wasn't there a guy in a black van driving around stalking kids? Or was there another guy who they said was in a black SUV or Escalade? Too many freaks to be on the look out for these days.

Agreed. I hope I don't sound too insensitive, but this is a wierd one.

Let me see if I understand correctly:

A mentally handicapped girl disappears, but the sheriff initially doesn't get involved.

The last person to see her alive lied to the parents about dropping her off. He then says she got into a Hummer in the Safeway parking lot.

The police do not interview him.

The press has given it little to no coverage, even though they cover stories like this all the time.

She was last seen at Safeway, but they are distributing flyers at the Nugget.

The sheriff is now involved, pulling over every Hummer in the county. What would that be, 3 of them?

With no other information to go on, the parents say that she is being held against her will, probably drugged, and no doubt being sexually exploited. Do they have evidence to that effect? I've never been in their shoes, but I think as a parent, I'd fear the worst but not claim it to be true without evidence.

Then comes the message that there is a "possibility that Kacie may have been taken to the Oakland/Bay area."

If the only thing we know is that she got into a Hummer, and have no idea who took her, what on earth would make them think she's being held, drugged, sexually exploited and headed for Oakland?

I pray for this child and her family. I wouldn't want to go through it, but it just seems like a weird case. Sorry if I sound insensitve. Am I expecting too much if I'm looking for it to make sense?

True. Because of her age, she was a presumed runaway. I think her circumstances should have made them treat her no differently that if she were 11.
The last person to see her alive lied to the parents about dropping her off. He then says she got into a Hummer in the Safeway parking lot.
The police do not interview him.

This one bothers me more than anything, and I still don't know who he is or why Kacie was with him. Was he driving her home from Bible Study? Is he a classmate of hers? And why was he not the first person the Sheriff's talked to? I have not asked her parents these questions, and other involved parties didn't have the answers.
The press has given it little to no coverage, even though they cover stories like this all the time.
The Sheriff's Department has this case classified as a Runaway. I don't see many 17 year old girls who run away from home on the news, unless there are special circumstances, which is why they are giving her at least a little coverage.
She was last seen at Safeway, but they are distributing flyers at the Nugget.
The kid who saw her last decided to tell her dad while they were at Nugget that he hadn't driven her home that night, which was his original story. Nugget was chosen by the people who coordinated the event, which was intended to distribute large amounts of fliers to groups of people, to be posted elsewhere.
The sheriff is now involved, pulling over every Hummer in the county. What would that be, 3 of them?
As far as the description (color, model) of the Hummer and the latest information that she may be in the Bay Area, I think we're just getting bits of information, and not the entire story. Kacie's parents are exhausted and at their wit's end, and are just trying to get some help.
With no other information to go on, the parents say that she is being held against her will, probably drugged, and no doubt being sexually exploited. Do they have evidence to that effect? I've never been in their shoes, but I think as a parent, I'd fear the worst but not claim it to be true without evidence.
This is Kacie's mom's worst fear - no evidence this is true. Her daughter has been missing for a week.
Then comes the message that there is a "possibility that Kacie may have been taken to the Oakland/Bay area."If the only thing we know is that she got into a Hummer, and have no idea who took her, what on earth would make them think she's being held, drugged, sexually exploited and headed for Oakland?
Again, I think there's much more information to come.

Not insensitive at all. It's been incredibly frustrating having bits and pieces of information, and I will take responsibility for passing on those bits and pieces. This is a family who means a great deal to me, and my intention was to get Kacie's face in front of more people. I've been asked a lot of questions that I can not answer, and I wish I could.

If the above is true, and I was the Sheriff, I would have this lying punk under heavy interrogation, bright lights and all.

Absolutely. I'm stunned at how this whole thing was handled.

As for the parents saying they believe she is being held against her will, sexually exploited etc., these parents are panic-stricken, sleep deprived and probably half blind with fury over the way they and their daughter were treated. They've probably had to grovel, beg, plead and threaten to get the news and law enforcement to lift a finger. They've been living a nightmare on top of a nightmare and I have no idea how I'd react in their position.

Hopefully some of these national organizations can put some pressure on law enforcement to interrogate the kid?

El Dorado County sheriff looking into report of missing teen

An El Dorado County sheriff's investigator is now following up on leads involving a 17-year-old El Dorado Hills girl last seen on March 18, Undersheriff Fred Kollar said today.

Those leads include reports circulated Monday afternoon indicating that Kacie Klinnert was last seen talking to several men, who were driving black sports utility vehicles, said Klinnert's mother, Vicki Zito. Similar SUVs were described by younger children who were approached by a stranger a few weeks ago in El Dorado Hills.

"We are not going to rule anything out," Kollar said.

Kacie was last seen about 9 p.m. March 18 in the Stonegate Village area of El Dorado Hills. On Monday the girl was still being regarded by officials as a "voluntary runaway" and not an "at-risk" missing person, despite assertions by her parents that she has been out on the street without important medications.

Kacie's parents, Scott and Vicki Zito, have mounted a wide-ranging e-mail campaign attempting to alert the community and gain media attention. They also have recruited volunteers to post fliers in store windows all over the area. Now they are hoping for an Amber Alert or some other type of statewide notification.

"We are doing anything we can to get her back," Vicki Zito said Tuesday afternoon in a telephone interview.

She is especially worried that her daughter has been abducted because Kacie is "developmentally and cognitively impaired."

"Imagine a 10-year-old girl in a 17-year-old's body," Zito said.

Kacie attends special education classes and has an aide that helps her with schoolwork.

Her daughter and a friend stepped out on the evening of March 18 to get a soda at a nearby shopping center and Kacie never came home, Zito said.

About a month ago, Kacie stayed out all night, so her parents waited until the next morning to sound the alarm.

The shift by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office came after further discussions with the parents, Kollar said. He stopped short of describing Kacie Klinnert as "at-risk." Investigators must also look into the assertions that the girl is developmentally disabled and may not have the capacity to take care of herself, he added.

Patrol deputies have been aware of the situation for several days, Kollar said. But, if she continues to be classified as a voluntary runaway, the best deputies could do is alert her parents if they spot her, Kollar said.

"This is not like her, to not reach out to anybody," Zito said.

The situation is further complicated because Kacie has been taking three medications to help her with cognitive problems, her parents said, and as far they, she has been without those medications for the past week, Vicki Zito said.

I hope she is safe. A '10-year-old' should not be out at that hour in this day and age where guys can take advantage of her...bad things can/do/often happen. Yes, that may be harsh, but this story hasn't "added-up" ever since I first heard it. Some bad choices here. Hope she comes home safely, and if so, I hope some lessons were learned.

I hope she is okay and that she is found soon. I also hope the police are paying close attention to her "friend" who has changed various aspects of his story...............

UC Davis, Sutter and Mercy San Juan Emergency now all have Kacie's flyer. The medical personnel and security were all very concerned and helpful and gave their word to keep their eyes and ears open.

Fortunately this seems to finally be getting some attention from the media... it was the top story on Fox40 tonight.
