BS. I have never heard anyone dismiss the 2010 D2 State Championship with "What if?" talk. They beat a defending State Champion in Serra and would have done the same if given the opportunity. Anyone that is paying attention knows that the Open Division was created for DLS. Public school teams like Folsom, Granite Bay, Grant and DO will NEVER be on a level playing field with DLS and is naive to believe that its fair. The CIFSJS could not afford to keep ignoring teams like Grant before race came to the forefront as an issue, hence the Open was created.
BS?
Let's not take this too seriously. These are opinions about high school football, after all.
You think that no public school will ever defeat DLS, and I'd like to see them keep trying here in NoCal. Otherwise DLS should simply advance to the Open Championship without having to play any NoCal playoff games at all, right? In fact, why allow them to play any teams here at all, even during the regular season? Their schedule should be solely against national private powerhouses, with travel to Texas, Florida, Ohio, New Jersey, SoCal, etc.
2010 was a milestone year for FHS, but obviously they want to take on the next challenge. That next challenge remains DLS. If FHS wants to opt out of that, and concede that they simply aren't as good, then maybe they should just say so, and as I said, DLS can advance to the Open Championship without having to play any regional games at all.
But if DLS is going to be treated as a NoCal team, which they are after all, then it's fitting that the next best NoCal team (it's been Folsom the past two years, and may well be Folsom again next year) should play them, to decide who gets to play the best SoCal team.
Otherwise, if you want to keep private and public programs completely separated, then perhaps the answer is to forget about geography, and have DLS play only SoCal private schools during the California playoffs, based on some ranking system. Since most of those SoCal powerhouses are private schools too, they would play each other along with DLS during the Open playoffs. In fact, why not do that at a national level? Instead of wasting a few weeks beating up on local teams, the big private powerhouses should be playing against their national peers. (But it probably gets tricky - besides the expense of travel, there are places like Texas that have so many good teams that they don't need any teams from other states to get involved.)
Meanwhle, the the public schools would continue to play based on geography (Division I, II, etc). But they would never get a chance to play for the title of being the best team in California. They would merely get to play one final game against a good team from another part of the state.
BTW I have no absolutely idea what you're talking about when it comes to race being a factor in playoff pairings.
