I have inquired about DSL through several ISP's and was told that DSL is not currently available where I live (historic district). Anyone else have this problem in certain areas of the historic district? I realize comcast provides high speed internet in the area, but I'd rather not use them.

I ahev had the exact same problem that you do. I currently have comcast internet, which is nice in some ways because of the speed(during some hours at least), but i would much rather haev DSL because of the faster upload speed(for servers) but i cant get it here...

Try contacting this provider. I'm right on the edge of historic and I recall an old neighbor had what I thought was DSL with this provider and was very happy with it.

Did you try SBC? We are in the historic district and have it.

SBC has added many neighborhood repeaters to allow DSL use in those areas. For example, I have 21,000 feet from my local switch, but have DSL with great speeds. No other ISP can provide DSL service to my house because the federal laws that apply to shared line use do not apply to installed repeaters.

I have contcted SBC Yahoo, as well as earthlink. Both told me DSL is not available in my area at this time. Something about being too far from a switching station for peak performance. I'll contact mindsync and see what they say. Thanks for the suggestion.

384K up.
Acres, if SBC told you you were too far away, then none of the other ISPs will be able to help you SBC will always have the advantage over the other ISPs as they own the lines and hardware.

hmm.... 384 k is the upload i have with cable so dsl isnt better in that area... I think im too far away from any of their repeaters for optimal performance, and im fairly happy with comcast now since my download is 4Mbit

We have Comcast, and would gladly (rapidly) change, but in our area (Figueroa off Natoma) we've been told it's not available (from multiple vendors)

those of you who do have dsl in the area- on average what kind of download/upload speeds do you get? (actual speeds, not what the company says it is)
