This fall, the City of Folsom will hold our first ever Community Service Day, mobilizing volunteers to help with projects around the city.

What do you think would be good projects to take on?

Something need painting? Planting? Restoration? Building? Clean up?

What would you do or like to see done?

I would like you to correct a pet peeve of mine. :) There is no "First Annual," rather it is either just the first or the inaugural.

I'm down for volunteering and I think planting is a good item.

Is this a way to make up for lack of city services until the S50 $$$ starts flowing in?

According to Common Errors in English Usage, it's an acceptable term. But, of course, that doesn't mean it bugs you any less ;)

How about the first or what is expected and planned to be annual?

It doesn't have to be replacing any city services. It could be anything that would benefit the community.

On the other hand, if my community needs help with things that city usually provides, I'm willing to pitch in.

I wonder how feasible it would be to construct a community garden for people who live in apartments and/or don't have room for a garden. Maybe that's too big a project for this purpose....but something I think would be good at some point.

A few years ago, a group of us did just that at the low-income apartments on Stafford. We had to go the day before to set fence posts, but other than that it was a one-day project.

I like the idea.

At this point, I think we'd have to plant cactus.

I like this idea, too.  As Steve pointed out, water might be a problem.  If some space could be found somewhere within the city hall/zoo/park area it would be great to set up a rainwater collection garden.  The rainwater could be collected from the senior center roof and directed to a cistern located in what looks like empty space alongside the train tracks on Google Maps or to the grass area behind the senior center adjacent to the parking lot.  The Stafford Street apartment garden is a good idea, but kind of limits it to those residents.  Same with the garden already established at Theodore Judah (which also lends itself to rainwater collection from the covered eating area right next to the garden, but then having strangers come on school grounds during school hours probably not appropriate.)  Again, probably more of a project than Steve was looking for.

The only thing I can think of involves sidewalks that need fixing or chunks of asphalt missing from streets and I don't think that can be done by amateurs.

I always thought it might be fun to plant a bunch of daffodils concentrated in one spot like the slopes alongside FHS or an entry road to Folsom from the freeway.  They don't require water.  Just plant in fall and wait for spring.

I'll keep my eye out for better ideas more in line with painting and cleaning.

I like the idea of creating a "destination" in Folsom. A place for folks to go and see something they don't see everyday. A large daffodil planting reminds me of Daffodil Hill. Something like that could be cool. I like the idea of the Bocce courts as well.

Maybe we could team up with the Chan House? In their rendering for the proposed project they have a large garden to the right of the house. I know they need help with fundraising and I thought maybe if the community pitched in and created a public oriental garden that folks could visit it could bring awareness and good will to the historic project. Of course the plantings near the proposed construction zone would have to be farther out and/or non-permanent. Maybe a pebble path or rock garden that would be hardy and easy to restore after the reconstruction of the building. How cool would it be for us to create a destination that doesn't require stuffing our faces (something I need less of LOL) or drinking alcohol. What do folks think?

I didn't know they had those plans with the Chan house.  That's definitely a good suggestion as well as the bocce ball courts.

The Chan House is a great idea!  The artifact collection from Folsom's Chinatown is going to be stored at the historical society and the Chan House museum would be the public venue for viewing those artifacts.  The history of the Chinese in Folsom is huge and no one knows about it.  It would be a real draw for the city for tourism too.  I wonder if there could be some sort of community support for fund raising for the Chan House museum specifically.  I think they need to raise nearly $200k to buy the property from the remaining family members and then they can begin actually work getting the building itself up to speed.  I know our community is largely composed of people who have moved here in the last 10 years and their focus is on a more-golf and fine wine and dining life style, but our history is a wonderful resource that other towns would love to have.  The more people know about it, the richer our heritage becomes.

I'm in for helping out, especially for projects like these that help preserve our city's heritage.
