In case you haven't heard, there is a proposal to create a 'River District' here in Folsom.

Excerpts from the City Master Plan: "The riverfront areas of Folsom are great assets that are currently underutilized.

While they offer recreational opportunities for Folsom residents, access to the river is limited. Folsom has the opportunity to make the river a more integral part of the community fabric by turning its attention to the river and increasing access."

Enhance Lake Natoma with Compatible Recreation Uses, Enhance the role of Lake Natoma as a place to recreate and an amenity for Folsom residents, and elevate Lake Natoma’s role in supporting local and regional business and commerce, including tourism, recreation and leisure.

Invest in strategically-located sites along the length of Lake Natoma for a diverse mix of passive and active recreation and tourism activities that are compatible with nearby land uses, historically and culturally important sites, significant habitat areas, restoration sites, and native fish and wildlife usage.

The River District Master Plan should include a means of honoring and interpreting Folsom’s heritage within the Historic District."

What do you think?

There are a lot of folks who would like to see it left alone, while others think it is a wasted asset, used and enjoyed by relatively few.

What do you want to see for the future?

Members of the public are invited to participate in a series of community workshops. Make your voice heard at the next one, April 11, from 5 to 7pm at the Folsom Community Center.

I'd like to see the Corporation Yard utlized better, with buildings restricted to the upper level where buildings are now, and the lower level left for open park space.  I think Folsom is lucky to have a State Park right on our door steps that is already bringing tons of tourists and visitors in every single day that we currently do  not have to spend anything on for maintenance, patrols, etc.  The State also has resource management specialists on staff that manage the wildlife, plants, and cultural resources on their dime.  It may look like a completely natural space, but it is managed to protect the habitat.  That's expensive.

I think in years to come, having an area as natural as possible is going to be a tremendous asset, rather than something that more resembles an urban park.

Knowing the past helps deciphering the future.
