Does anyone know what is going on with all the businesses moving out of the Walmart shoping center? Is that center going to be torn down for houseing of some sort?

It looks like they are going to either paint or re-stucco some of the bldgs nearest to the street (blockbuster, the restaurants and more) I also get the impression that the rent there is very high and some places are locating to other areas

I sure HOPE that is all it is! I am from out of town and have put in an offer on the puchase of a home near there. Afterwards, I heard a rumor that a big, new Walmart was going to be built somewhere off of Hwy 50, the old Walmart would be closed down, all the businesses are not renewing their leases due to moving to the E. Bidwell area where they can attract more customers, AND, that the entire shopping center was going to be torn down for "Affordable Housing!" As in Apartments!!! I am wondering if I should withdraw my offer on the home. I do not want to lose equity in the house I purchase due to Apts. close by bringing the value down. I am very concerned!

Pet Vets is in that shopping complex. They are very busy and have lots of business. I really doubt that they would move. There is also a medical lab that stays busy, and some kind of credit union with ATM. Office Max is located there also.

Karenkeever,

You could certainly check with City Hall to find out if that rumor is true. I tend to doubt it, as retail space is pretty valuable and should make more money for the property owners than affordable housing would. WalMart has simply outgrown that location, as is quite apparent when you walk into the store. Food Source never had the business it needed to survive, particularly once WinCo opened, so they shut down. I'm bummed about that because it was a VERY convenient place for us to pick up groceries, but oh well. I think we'll see some updating done to the existing buildings and new businesses will move in.

If you're moving in to the neighborhood behind that shopping center, welcome to the neighborhood. I think you'll be happy living here, as I can't imagine a more convenient and central location within Folsom. The neighborhood parks are great for the kids when the weather is warm and the people are friendly. You'll see me complain from time to time about idiot drivers speeding up and down Lembi, but you run into that kind of thing in any neighborhood.

Would that be the radio shack that is presently in the 24HR Fitness strip mall? I read in the newspaper that the radio shack in the Safeway parking lot at Willard will be closing.

My goodness, where do these rumors get started? The Walmart shopping center is privately owned. the owner may be doing some updating of the buildings, as this center has been there for some time. The grocery store closed - also nothing to do with the City and I can only assume that it was for lack of sufficient business that they closed. The City does NOT own the center, nor have there been any plans submitted to the City for anything at that site. There is talk of another Walmart near the freeway - but I don't know the status of that. However, I can assure you that the City is not aware of any plans to close the shopping center. This site has nothing to do with affordable housing, nor is it likely that this or a future City Council would eliminate a shopping center in favor of any kind of housing. For the record, affordable housing is not limited to apartments, and there is no evidence that apartments decrease property values for single family homes. That has certainly not been the case elsewhere in Folsom, despite claims from single family home owners in neighborhoods where apartments were being considered about 7 years ago, when the apartments were built on Blue Ravine across from Flower and Oak Avenue near Creekside. In fact, the only apartment related activity of late has been converting existing apartments to condos.

Feel free to contact me directly or anyone in the Community Services Department at City Hall with any additional questions.

I am not sure what is moving where, but I was talking to the broker, and Radio shack already has finished up the lease for that suite.

I heard they were gonna close the shopping center down and open up an Indian gaming casino to rival Thunder Valley. In the building where Food Source used to be, I heard that AeroJet will be leasing it to test rockets.

I heard that the old Food Source building is going to be an shooting range and the parking lot is going to be a go-kart racetrack. Once WalMart moves, that's going to be a new location for Centerfolds strip club.

Food Source shut down because a generator for one of their refrigeration units went out and it was going to cost 300k to fix. The cost to fix it was not worth it, so they shut down. I received this information when I talked to the manager there. I went in there to buy milk and the shelves were bare, so I asked why. smile.gif

I did hear that a Super Wal-Mart was in the works, but I did not hear about them shutting down the existing one. To be honest I think we could use two, as crowded as it gets in there. The other story I heard was that they were going to shut down the Sam's Club because of a lack of business and convert it into a Super Wal-Mart. This came from a Sam's Club employee.

Actually....that would be a pretty convenient location for a church for me! It might actually make it to church more often!

I think you have that confused with the vacant corner at Sibley at Glenn. After years of trying to find a buyer without success, the Orangevale Gun Club is going to reopen at their original location. There are concerns about the temporary conversion of the firing range into single-family housing, but they expect that the inhabited building nuisance will only be temporary after the first shots are fired.

And I think the old parking lot will become a combination go-kart racetrack and skatepark. Costs $8 for a round of go-karting, but if you take out a property-destroying deviant, you get your money back.

Finally, the big front wall on Wal-Mart between the front doors and the garden center is going to become the first city-santioned graffiti wall. Again, with a go-kart lane running in the same space.
