I think this affordable housing rumor was maybe confused with a recent "visioning" meeting where they invited residents to come in and give input into what Folsom could do in the future, no matter how pie-in-the-sky it was. I am sure Kerri would have better details about this. I can't remember if it was a city thing or a Sacramento County thing.

I remember seeing one version of the visioning process showing something like high-rise apartments in the Riley area where Wal-Mart and Kohl's is. It was just a what-if scenario where planners were trying to get the community involved.

You guys are way too funny! When I first moved to Folsom I was rocked out of bed more than once from the test firing at AeroJet. At least it wasn't as bad as the twin sonic booms we experienced numerous times in Orlando. My housekeeper (from Russia) saw the mushroom cloud once and insisted we go find a shelter. It was two hours before I could calm her.

Yeah, I remember the test firings at Aerojet, too, and the wonderful orange smoke that would cover my back yard if the wind blew in the wrong direction.

Not too sure what that has to do with this subject though.

Sorry for being snippy. The Indian casino idea is pretty funny.

Thank goodness it is not going to become a church. hypocritesmiley.png

Well, it could become a Wal-Mart church.

They worship low priced goods made in foreign countries.

Karenkeever,

You could certainly check with City Hall to find out if that rumor is true. I tend to doubt it, as retail space is pretty valuable and should make more money for the property owners than affordable housing would. WalMart has simply outgrown that location, as is quite apparent when you walk into the store. Food Source never had the business it needed to survive, particularly once WinCo opened, so they shut down. I'm bummed about that because it was a VERY convenient place for us to pick up groceries, but oh well. I think we'll see some updating done to the existing buildings and new businesses will move in.

If you're moving in to the neighborhood behind that shopping center, welcome to the neighborhood. I think you'll be happy living here, as I can't imagine a more convenient and central location within Folsom. The neighborhood parks are great for the kids when the weather is warm and the people are friendly. You'll see me complain from time to time about idiot drivers speeding up and down Lembi, but you run into that kind of thing in any neighborhood.

flag.gif I have several friends in the business community here in town and they tell me that we are getting a large Wal Mart Super Store up near the freeway. Has anyone heard if this is the general area that they are looking at for this store? An additional Wal Mart would be a great addition to the community. flag.gif

It's hard to imagine that your friends in the business community would be all that excited about a Super WalMart coming to town if they are in any kind of retail business. Unless they offer very unique products or services, the SWM is very likely to take much of their existing business. The typical small retailer just cannot compete with a Super WalMart.

You can only assume that the current WalMart would close and possibly Albertson's due to the grocery element of Super WalMart. Is it good to have 5 large stores empty at the same time ?? Ralph's , Ralph's, Food Source , WalMart , and (my opinion) Albertson's.

Which brings up the question in my mind regarding the city's perpetual rallying cry about how great it is for our tax base when all these superstores go in. If they're putting other stores out of business, aren't we really just breaking even and losing jobs?

Not to mention the potential for blight if the closed stores can't be refilled with a suitable business. It isn't just any business that needs 20,000 square feet of floor space in a strip mall, so Food Source or Albertsons or Raleys leaving really could be bad news for the overall look/feel of the area.
