A guy just knocked on my door and said, "I hate to bug ya, but do you have a freezer or refrigerator in your garage?"

I told him I did not, and he said, "The reason I ask is that I deliver steaks to David over here (motioning down the street), and he's my last delivery of the day, so I'm letting boxes of steaks go for $5 a pound."

I turned him down and he went next door, then across the court (skipped the house with the high stairs).

Anyway, just be aware. Short, stout guy about 40 or so, dark hair, brown shirt, Green Bay Packers hat.

Driving a modern small delivery truck with what looked like a large G on the side, with some graphics I couldn't make out.

I never buy steaks, but that deal seems too good to be true, no?

Ive had a similar salesman hit me up like that before. Turn him down a few times and the price will get cheaper! I bought some from a guy. Not bad steaks. I think the "dave down the street" bit is just an sales story.

If he starts off dishonest, I won't trust his product. It would be better to just say, "I sell steaks cheap. They aren't steakhouse quality, but for $5 a pound, they can't be beat."

That I could respect.

And he likely doesn't have a Folsom Business License. I'd call the police to check up on him.

That scam has been around for a while.  I'm surprised we haven't all heard of that, but I guess the guy is counting on the fact that we haven't.

You can google this for yourself: ; type in "door-to-door meat scam".

Here's an example from Florida:

Yea, I don't think I'm buying steaks off the street. In fact, I'm not buying anything from anybody who knocks on my door.

Wrong.

Do NOT bother the police with trivial matters like this...they have more important things to do.

Now, if you see *steak guy* looking into home windows or car windows, then go ahead and call the police...but use the non-emergency phone number.

Let's use some common sense, folks.

I'd call the police.  This is a well-known scam, and the perps need to be stopped.  Simply "passing the buck" to the next victim is not being a responsible citizen.  I'm not convinced that the police have "more important things to do" in the middle of the day.

The Folsom PD and Neighborhood Watch staff have said they would like to be notified. If they are not a legitimate business, they could be a scam, an opportunity to case a home, etc.

Oh stop it.

You're only a *victim* if you allow yourself to be a victim.

In this day and age, anyone who buys anything from total strangers showing up at their front door probably DESERVES to be victimized. The cops can't save you from everything. You live and learn.

Ever heard of Darwin ??

I can't share those sentiments.  If you see someone preying on the public, law enforcement should be alerted.  Your way, it's all upside and no downside for the crooks.  If nothing else, it's an illegal business practice.  I certainly wouldn't simply send the scoundrel on to my neighbors.  I've lived and learned enough to know that we should "have each other's backs".

If one suspects a scam looking for a victim, I agree on calling the cops (non-emergency number; not 911).

One may have naive / trusting neighbors, perhaps the elderly, that aren't stupid but just overly trusting. Community members should look out for each other.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil.....

No, he's a horrible, horrible man who should be shunned by us all.

Happy?

He apparently had not heard about this scam, so was caught off guard, and alerted us via this forum.  At least he wasn't mocking those who do get taken by the scam.

I didn't want to drag this out.  I just thought that it's a police-worthy thing.  I'm not here to debate forever.

My decency and sense of responsibility are often under question!

I didn't think to call the cops as I didn't think he was committing a crime. I did call a neighbor of mine to let him know about it.

I didn't think that he might be casing joints, but who knows?

Having been to many meetings and presentations with Folsom PD, they always advocate calling them to have them check things out, and don't consider it a bother or waste of time when we call.
