Hopefully he'll treat his customers better than he does at the overpriced wine bar!

You'd have to be acting like a huge jerk to get treated badly there. Hmmmm..

Actually, it just sounds like you're just upset that they don't serve budget wines, maybe try Applebees next time?

Nope, it was a group of women out for a bday party but thanks for playing. And I'm not a wine snob so I don't usually go there although I've been there once or twice unwillingly and the place is just how i imagined, stuffy and overpriced.

So is anyone who enjoys fine wine and is able to tell the difference between junk and a good wine therefore considered a "wine snob"?

Does the same go for those who are able to appreciate fine food and don't consider spending $$$ on it a waste?

I agree that Back Wine Bar is expensive.  Whether it is worth it or not is a matter of opinion.  Some days I think it's worth it, other days I don't.  I feel the same way about Sutter Street Steakhouse and Manderes.  Every time I have been to Back Wine Bar, I have been happy with the food and have not felt ripped off.

I'm looking forward to checking out Folsom Tap House.

My experience has been limited to placing an order to go for my Bride, and this is what I ordered. It's steak and potatoes, first of all it's a top sirloin which was kind of chewy but had good flavor-the potatoes were good. all in all, I will probably not order anything again. Unfortunately the picture was too large to upload. It is 3 very small pieces of meat and 3 small 1/2 slices of potatoes. Hey what do you want for $12.00 ?

I met Jeff before he opened the wine bar, and knowing that the restaurant business is tough for a variety of reasons, I hoped for the best but didn't expect it to last.

Yes, there are wine snobs in the world, and yes, they are attracted to wineries and wine bars, 'cause that's where the wine is.

There's a big fat but in there, and that is that the wine culture isn't snobby any more. Yes, there are probably places where the owners or waiters are stuffy and the clientele snobby, but for most places it is very casual, approachable and fun.

Jeff is a Sommelier, a very well-trained and educated wine expert. I've spent a lot of time talking about wine with him.

I'm not a snob, but I do have a certain level of fascination with it, how different grapes taste, how the same grapes grown in different places, even sometimes on the other side of the hill, can taste different. I guess I love wine, but I'm not a wine expert. It's a great little pastime for me and my wife.

I think that sometimes, people who don't know much about wine or understand it might see someone holding it up to the light, discussing clarity and color, smelling it, swirling it and smelling it again, and think they are weird or snobby, but that isn't always the case.

As for atmosphere at the Back Wine Bar and Bistro, it is elegant but casual, and attracts all types, from suits to flip-flops.

Jeff hires good people and educates them so they can provide great service and advice.

Yes, it is pricey. It ain't Denny's.

If my wife and I go there for dinner, we do so because it will be special. We know that we're going to pay more than if we went to Mimi's Cafe and had carafe of Gallo Burgundy.

There are ways, however, to get the experience without spending too much. On Tuesdays, there is a 3 course dinner for $30. On Wednesdays, you can bring your own wine and they'll waive corkage if you buy an entree.

They also have events where they'll bring in a winery or a some wines from a particular distributor, or they'll just feature a specific type of wine, and they usually charge $10 for it.

On Thursdays you can pick any wine and 25% off (with dinner).

They have a happy hour featuring $3 glasses of wine, beers and appetizers.

So, yes, it can be pricey and yes, there can be snobs, but overall it's a pretty relaxing place with friendly people and good food and you can sometimes get away cheap.

I like the more expensive places (& I like Back Wine Bar & Bistro, and I don't even drink!), as they typically have better food than the chains. These days, I prefer my home cooking to eating out, so I won't waste my money at the chains. Just today, my lead at work wanted me to do something for her, and bribed me with dinner at Sutter St Steakhouse, I jumped on that! :)

I talked to Brian at Strings today and he said Folsom Tap House   had a kitchen fire over the weekend which will greatly impact any opening date. Basically they have to go through the nosebleed of getting new permits IE: Health Dept., Fire Dept. and some others I'm sure.. Sad way to start, but get it out of the way now..

I talked to Jeff on Monday and he told me they are going to open Thursday the 3rd with just serving food only. They still have not received their Liquor License as of yet. I might check it out.

I just went by there this afternoon and there is a "Now Open" sign out front and a banner reading "Now Serving Food". I think this means that they are open, but not (yet) serving alcoholic drinks.

Yes. After the word of their struggle to get their liquor license cleared went on the news, the powers that be moved things around and got it done.

Now fully operational.

Food is actually pretty good here but beware on some of the beer prices. A DogFish Head pint (but not a 20oz pint) was $11 which is way more than it costs at Sam Horne's.

We ate here tonight - myself, hubby and 18 month old twins.

Wonderful serivce - so sweet to to the kids, they didn't make me feel like a jerk for having them.

The food was good.

The beer was good.

The interior was blah.

I don't know that we'll go there on a regular basis, but for family time, it was a nice night out.

A Pint can never be 20oz.  A Pint is a Pint, 16oz. That's like saying a 1 Gallon (but not a 1.5 Gallon Gallon).

Still...fine craft brew can be had for 5.00-6.00 as you noted!  I would never pay $11.00 for the same.
