I do think people who keep their dogs outside are missing the whole point.

An inside dog weaves its way into family life in ways that are heartwarming and sometimes even useful. Our dog fetches the paper for us every morning (I chuckle to myself when I see our neighbors tip-toeing out in their pajamas). When she finishes that job, she traipses back upstairs and, if I'm not up yet, puts her paws on the side of the bed to wake me. Later in the day, she will lie companionably by my side as I work on the computer or fold laundry. There is something peaceful and just nice about that kind of quiet company.

Yeah, I pick up tufts of fur from the carpet (and, I'll admit, from the sofa!) and I occasionally have to wipe a trail of muddy pawprints. But it seems like a small price to pay.
