Black Angus in Folsom is consistently good - service, price, and food. Most Sundays' Bee has an insert for specials at Black Angus. Their steaks and prime rib are excellent as are their desserts.

We've never been disappointed; and they have "call-head seating" which is what we used to call "reservations".

Gosh, we thought Black Angus was terrible. The steaks were no better than I can cook at home, and the sides were mediocre at best. We had some kind of "complete meal" where they served us a plate of appetizers to begin with -- the appetizers were banal, greasy, and tasteless.

When I go out to eat, I expect food that is different from and better than I can cook at home -- something a little creative, fresh, and flavorful.

Mimi's, on the other hand, is very good. They have some interesting menu choices and their food is fresh and flavorful. Their blue cheese, walnut, and strawberry green salad is delicious, as is their spice muffin and their Tuscan chicken. And, they are not expensive -- our family of 4 eats for about $25 (the kids share a kids' plate).

I've only been to Black Angus a couple of times, but the food was most excellent both times. Steak once, Chicken another time.

I would have to agree with bordercolliefan that Black Angus isn't anything special. We go there with gift cards and coupons but that's it.

Looks like everyone likes Mimi's! Anyone think Round Table is overpriced? I like their pizza but their prices are way too steep!

Round Table is great, but expensive. Try Roma's by Ralphs. Very good, but a lot of sodium in their meats. Every time I eat there I wake up around 3am having to chug a 32ouncer of water. As for Black Angus, I do not care for their food. I look at Black Angus and lump them with all the rest of the run-of-the-mill restaurant franchises. However, one franchise that I was really impressed with is Tahoe Joes. Their food was really good each time I've been.

Speaking of franchises, I don't like any of the Mexican restaurant chains. Don't care for El Torito, Chevy's, On the border, ... For good Mexican food, you definitely need to find a family owned hidden gem. I have not been extremely thrilled with any of the Mexican restaurants in the surrounding Sacto area. Carmelita's off of hazel is pretty good. Anybody have a really good Mexican restaurant in the greater Sacto area?

Found a great new place, family owned and very authentic if you don't mind a little drive.

It's called El Sombrero and it's in the Ralphs shopping center on Douglas and I believe Sierra College in Granite Bay. I know a number of ex San Diego people who try to eat there at least once a week, and if there is one thing they know about, it's good mexican food.

What are the prices like at Roma's... Say for a large one topping?

Ate at the Pot Belly Deli tonight. $24 for a family of four. Red Robin makes better burgers but usually costs $15-$20 dollars more. So I guess my opinion is that the food was okay and I'll probablly eat there again but I'm in no hurry to go back.

My husband and I are always on the hunt for great Mexican places. Cabos is wonderful, but they are located in Granite Bay...but definitely worth the drive. Another good one is Hacienda in old Folsom..the food is great but for some reason they only serve RC cola instead of Pepsi or Coke. If that doesn't bother you, the food is great!

Here's my personal opinion on restaurants/meals I've found so far during the past 5 years of working in Folsom (lived here in Empire Ranch for over 3 years)...

AMERICAN:
For an American breakfast, Gold Miners Cafe (huge portions) and Sutters Street Grill are excellent. Although I'm not a big fan of chains, Mimi's cafe is great for dinner. For that special occasion prime rib or seafood dinner, I like the Cliff House.

FRENCH:
Bidwell Street Bistro has great French cuisine (try the Creme Brulee). They have by invitation-only wine tasting nights if you get on their mailing list.

ITALIAN:
Ristorante something (or other) is the authentic mom and pops in town. I personally prefer the Macaroni Grill chain restaurant at the moment, even though I'm not generally a big fan of chains. I love their Shrimp Portofino and Chocolate Cake the most. For bargain hunters, the Spaghetti Factory chain restaurant off the Hazel Avenue exit gives you a lot of bang for the buck.

PIZZA:
For another bargain, Costco sells a very tasty ready-made combo pizza (their secret is mainly in their cooking/heating element, so their take n' bakes do not taste as good). Folsom's Costco Food Court has a hotline to call to schedule your pickups. It's our family favorite next to Round Table Pizza.

MEXICAN:
Sol Azteca and has great authentic mom and pops mexican food. Everything I've had there has been great. For atmosphere, Hacienda Del Rio's outdoor seating is great. For great take-out Mexican food, Dos Coyotes near the Folsom Outlets and Tecate Grill near Target has great food. If you are really in a hurry, Jimboy's Taco has tasty Mexican.

CHINESE:
I personally feel that Folsom Seafood Buffet has the best All-You-Can-Eat Chinese Seafood Buffet in town. Their sushi bar is good. The best tasting Chinese food is at a little known (i.e. hidden from view) Chinese restaurant called Rice Express at the Ralph's Shopping Center. Try their Cantonese dinner special. For the best customer service and atmosphere, Jennie's Palace is the place to go for Chinese. For quick Chinese, Bel Air has terrific Brandy Fried Chicken, Paper Wrapped Chicken, Fried Won Ton Wrap, and Chicken Chow Fun. Plus, you can eat in their nice Java City seating area.

VIETNAMESE:
For Vietnamese, Pho Hoa near the Kohl's Shopping Center has great food, but horrible customer service. The other Vietnamese Restaurant, off Riley, uses artificial yellow and artificial red food coloring in their food, but has excellent customer service. I would go for the poor service over eating artificially colored chicken and rice. I thought I was eating curry rice/chicken.

JAPANESE:
For Japanese, I no longer need to to all the way down to Mukuni's off Hazel Blvd. I now go to Taiko Sushi at Folsom's Broadstone Marketplace for the same high quality authentic sushi. Their "hot one" sushi and soft-shelled crab sushi are the best.

ENGLISH:
For good old banger or fish n' chips at an English Pub, the place to go is the Streets Of London off the older part of E. Bidwell.

ICE CREAM:
Marble Slab has better tasting home-made icecream than Cold Stone. Cold Stone icecream is much too runny, unlike the natural home-made icecream that I make at home. For better atmosphere in terms of seating, I like to go out to Bel Air to buy a pint of Ben&Jerrys and sit at Bel Air's Java City seating area. For a nice evening stroll in the town, Sutter Street shops are generally open during the evenings and has an icecream and chocolate confection shop called Snooks.

COFFEE:
None. We drive up as far as Lake Tahoe to get organic coffee from Aspen Sierra Coffee Company...http://www.alpensierra.com/news_bestof.html or drive up to as far as Shasta City to get Haas Beans Coffee's organic blend...http://www.hasbeans.com/locations.html. We make a fun trip out of it. If we don't have the time, it's Peets Coffee.

GOURMET/HEALTHY FOOD:
Trader Joes in the Lowe's plaza has great take-out salads and meals in their refridgerated section. The food is tasty and their prices are extremely reasonable. Plus, you feel good about what you are eating.

I'm sure I can think of some more to write about, but I've got to run.

Julice, that was a great description of everything. I still haven't tried Gold Miner's Cafe but with all the great reviews it is on my list. Good tip on Costco pizza since Round Table is expensive. I thought I might be the only one who thought Cold Stone had runny ice cream. The one on Sunrise is awful!

My family and I have been to the Gold Miner's Cafe for breakfast a couple of times. When my son came up from LA I took him and he could not believe the large portions and the quality of the food. Everything is made from scratch and it is great. It is hard to eat everything on your plate.

I give it a GREAT !!!!!

I don't see what people see in Jimboys.
I've been there twice and both times the place was dirty and the food was greasy and not very good in general.
No reason to go back a third time.
I don't see how they stay in business when there are so many better places nearby.

I have to admit that the food it a bit greasy, but it's really fast Mexican food on the run. Check out MyFolsom.com's 2003 and 2005 Best of Folsom Food Category. I didn't vote, but it appears that JimBoys won both years in the Fast Food Category. Carls Jr. was the winner for 2004.
