We (taxpayers) just spent a billion dollars for the new gates so that they can keep the lake fuller and not have to release water unless an emergency release is required.  However, in the 5 years the project has been underway, they never updated their 40 year old operation plan and cannot operate the dam with the new gates accounted for.   This is our government at work, let's give them more money to manage things for us!

I think you are referring to the new spillway. Some people here have said is not operational yet. Am waiting for those *in the know* to give us an update on when it can be used. And be careful...some folks here don't like criticism of Calif Govt. I'll let you figure out why!

All I heard they have left is landscaping B. S. Nothing to actually do with the function of the spillway.

Yeah, I saw that. There is a TON of snow still up there, so I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt this time. But if we have a low lake level and 5 MPH boating in July or August, I'll be criticizing "them" again.

I think we are very fortunate there is so much snow this year.   I hope it doesn't get too warm too quickly, though.  Oroville won't be allowed to fill while repairs happen so I suspect Folsom will most likely have to help make up the difference again this year.

You have to keep in mind that Folsom is not a recreational lake, but there for flood control. Boating comes second. If the Auburn damn would have been built it would be the opposite with Folsom staying full year round.

43" of water is stored in the snow pack.  That's more than the Sacramento area has received all season and look how fast the lake filled-up.  Depending on the rate that it melts, the effect can be like a series of heavy rain storms hitting back-to-back.  The storm coming in this week is also a warmer one, so they probably expect significant melting as it rains in the mountains for a good chunk of the storm.

 

So it makes sense to clear some room.

Actually, boating/recreation comes 3rd, after 1) flood control, and 2) "environmentalism" ("protecting the Delta Smelt, Delta Frog, Delta Bug, etc" downstream). Then of course all that great water ends up going out to sea. Lovely.

Well there you go. No one should be complaining about the short boating season then. Realistically unless you are out on the Lake in the AM during the midweek, the lake sucks. If you are into water sports the Delta is the place to go. If you are into drinking/drunks, people that have no idea on how to operate watercraft and 3 foot swells then Folsom is the place to be.
