Folsom City Council Challenger Roger Gaylord

Roger Gaylord, the 3-time challenger for a seat on Folsom’s City Council, has finally been declared the winner in the 2016 election.

Using the slogan,  ‘The Fresh Face for City Council’, Gaylord did what no other candidate seemed able to do, defeat an incumbent in Folsom’s election.

On November 9, the day after the election, early results showed Gaylord trailing Ernie Sheldon and Jeff Starsky by more than 600 votes. With each weekly update, however, he gained ground, overtaking Starsky for second place last week, and tonight, declared it was over, with a nearly 600 vote lead and all precincts counted.

Gaylord had failed to win a seat in the previous 2 election cycles, but was not going to give up.  At times targeting the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, and real estate developers, claiming they were responsible for keeping the incumbents in power despite dissatisfaction from many voters, Gaylord toned down his rhetoric this time around.

He cited the importance of government transparency and communications, listening to citizens, and smart growth.

His message resonated with voters, and buoyed by the support and momentum gained from his Facebook page, as well as discussions on Facebooks’ ‘Folsom Chat’, Gaylord developed an army of volunteers, many of whom donated to his campaign, planted signs all over town, and spread his message.

Security Consultant raised in Folsom, he will replace Jeff Starsky, a corporate attorney and City Council member for 16 years.  Starsky has been credited with helping bring more businesses to Folsom and for keeping city services operating during the recession, but has sometimes ruffled feathers with his direct demeanor.

Roger Gaylord will be sworn in as a member of the Folsom City Council at the Council meeting, Tuesday December 13, at 630pm.

Steve, is that from The Folsom Telegraph, or if not, what's the source?

Whoever wrote it cracks me up:  "but has sometimes ruffled feathers with his direct demeanor".  That's a nice way of putting it.   But hey, anyone should be satisfied with 16 years served on a City Council.

Next up  Chad Vander Veen over takes Miklos ...

I've only met Chad once and he seems like a nice, thoughtful, articulate, classy guy but he's run for election three times (state assembly in 2010, city council in 2014 and 2016) and finished in last place each time.  He doesn't seem comfortable with traditional campaign methods such as signs, mail pieces, fundraising, etc. However, his non-campaign campaign strategy hasn't worked.  He might be better off seeking a position on one of the city's commissions.

Jennifer Lane's FB page says Ernie and Roger will be sworn in on Monday, December 12 at 4pm.  I couldn't find anything on the city's website though.

The Folsom Telegraph has them being sworn in at the Tuesday, December 13, city council meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Congrats, Roger.

The City of Folsom Charter states:

Councilmember Term. The terms of Councilmembers shall be 4 years and shall begin the second Monday in December following their election and qualification.

That lends credence to the Monday swearing-in ceremony. They can't begin their term on the second Monday if they have not been sworn in.

Well, that's great!  What a professional write-up - I thought it was from an article in a newspaper.

We've supported Gaylord the last 3 elections and persistence  certainly paid off. Ernie Sheldon should be chosen as mayor by the other 4 council members as this will be Ernie's last term.  If not now, when??.  I'm sorry I will miss the swearing in, however, there will be lots of Ernie supporters for Mayor.  Next up is Miklos and Howell seats.  The times they are a changin' .....and hopefully for the better.
