We are new to folsom and would love to live in the historic district. We have 2 young kids and want to some input on Theodore Judah. Has anyone had experience with the school and impressions on staff and perhaps any issues?
Also, what about crime in the area?
Any thoughts on this?

This is my understanding, so your milage may vary.

The principal at Theodore Judah is outstanding.  He used to be the principal at the school where my children go and he is sorely missed.  My wife recently ran into him at our school; he was there escorting a student who transferred from his school to help ensure the student had a easier time with the change.  I don't think most other principals would do something like that.  Also, the teachers really liked him.

As a general rule, TD has poorer students.  I don't know the percentage, but they tend to get children of prisoners because the school is relatively close to the prison.

TD is the school with the GATE program (or something like a GATE program).  I know several teachers who left other schools to teach in the GATE program.  They love it there.

I also know several students who transferred from my children's school to TD for various reasons and all love it there too.

Hopefully a TD parent will respond.  They should have the best and most accurate information.

Hi Return and welcome to myfolsom.com!

Theodore Judah is the lowest-performing school in one of the highest performing school districts in the state.

Yes, there are some poor kids who go there, and some may be children of prisoners.

On the other hand, they have hard-working parents involved in school activities and a dedicated staff doing their best to give all of these kids a chance.

We don't generally have a crime problem in Folsom, with car burglaries and theft being most common issues.  Living in the Historic District, you can expect tourists driving through to get to Sutter St shops and restaurants, to look at the old homes, or to find parking, so be aware of that.

As a Realtor, I would not discourage clients from buying in the Historic District nor within the Judah boundary, but would want them to educate themselves about any neighborhood they choose.

Did I already talk with you on the phone? If so, then I don't have much to add. We live in the HD, but send our four children (ages 7-13) to St. John Notre Dame School because we are strong believers in values-based education, not because of any particular issues with the public schools, or TD in particular. We do, however, know several families who  send their children to TD, and to my knowledge, they are all very pleased with the school. While there are probably some prisoner children in the school, I've never actually seen any confirmation that that is the case. PM me if you would like contact info for parents of children at TD.

As for crime in the HD, if it is higher than in the city as a whole, it would appear to be mostly nuisance crime associated with the bars on Sutter Street (DUI and public intoxication related issues). That said, compared to most of Folsom, the HD is pretty urban. You can expect strangers walking down the street, and some of them may not be your typical suburban types (who you would rarely find walking down the street in the first place).  That said, even being at probably the busiest residential corner in the HD, the issues we have dealt with in our four years on Natoma Street have been limited to trash on our lawn, noisy drunks walking down the street at night, and drug and alcohol use in Granite Park (which is certainly not unique in Folsom to Granite Park).

We moved from the Preserve (technically in the HD) into the heart of the HD. It is a very different experience, but we have no regrets and get to live in a really cool old house with an awesome yard, and are a short walk from all the great things in the HD.
