Totally smelled it.... We had whole house fan running and had to turn off. What was it?

I don't know what caused the smoke by you, but some of the people in my neighborhood use fire pits and those fire pits reek! In the colder climate it isn't an issue because our windows are shut. But when it's warm enough to open the windows..... well..... why would anyone need a fire pit when it's warm enough to open windows? We end up having to shut ours because the smoke irritates my lungs.
