American kids, some might say black kids in particular, need positive role models and leaders. Richard Sherman grew up in a rough area, was a great student-athlete, graduated second in his high school class with a 4.25 GPA, then went to Stanford. He is a student of the game, claiming to watch hours of video of opposing teams and players. He says he doesn't party because although he'd be able to make plays the next day, he wouldn't be his best, and he wants to be the best.

If he played his cards right, this is the image the world would have of him.

Instead, he presents himself as an immature trash talker, and when given the microphone in front of the whole country, instead of saying something positive, like 'I worked so hard to get here, studied hours of tape, and kept my nose clean so I'd be able to make that play', he goes into a rant and says, "“I’m the best corner in the game, when you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree that’s the result you’re going to get. Don’t you ever talk about me!”

He throughout his brief career he has become known for taunting other players and bragging about his greatness. This is what people see, and the kids who look up to him will emulate that.

Agreed. I hated Deon Sanders before he was a 49er, loved him while he was one, then hated him again when he left!

Did you see any of his commentary when he wasn't full of adrenalin after winning a tough game and having a mic shoved in his face? I think he presents himself very well when not "in the moment" like he was for that 20 seconds that people only seem to remember.

Exactly what I thought. His articles are extremely well written and he can present himself well. I'm a fan, but if I only went by those 20 seconds and all the Fortywhining about it, I definitely would think differently.

I'm going to use the years of hard work, his academic record, his philanthropy, and his level of commitment to form my opinion instead of 20 second immediate post-game. It was a stupid moment, but just a moment in a lifetime.

Plenty of other players haven't been judged as harshly for a moment.

Congrats to Seattle on a well deserved Super Bowl title, beating New Orleans, San Francisco and Denver in the process. My prediction (hope)  was wrong and Nomad well done on yours. Yes defense wins championships and Seattle's D is in same conversation as Pittsburgh 1976, Chicago 1986, Baltimore 2000.  Now we'll have to once again listen to all the media talk about how Manning is under .500 in playoffs, has fewer SB titles than his brother and  Brady and why can't he win another one. Would've silenced his critics had Denver won.  Never has a safety been so crucial to a team as it was on Sunday. Denver never recovered.... Great halftime show and commercials just so-so   Go NINERS!!!!

I wish people would also apply a similar perspective when confronted by politicians' sound bites in the news.

Agreed. Unless what they says is either an outright lie or incredibly stupid. That's different than a moment of poor judgment.

It is more than those 20 seconds. He has a reputation of being an asshat on the field toward the other team in ways that I was always taught was being unsportsmanlike when I played sports.  I remember seeing clips on the show Sound FX where he was mic'd up for a game.  I thought that if he was really like that in every game, he was damn lucky he played defense because he'd be eating dinner through a straw if he acted like that on offense.  He probably wouldn't be like that if he was in a position that took hits.

So good for him. He's a good guy off the field.  Within the context of being a football player, he has proven himself to be a punk on the field.  That 20 seconds was just the first view that the MSM had into the type of guy that other players have known for years.

Yes, which is what makes it worse.

Microphones get shoved in athletes faces after every game. And this wasn't an isolated incident.

He should have showed grace and class, not boast and rub salt in the wounds.

Win with grace, lose with grace.

Like Kaep mocking Cam Newton and always kissing the biceps? I assume he is under these standards of grace too?

I think that what Kaep does is silly, but no sillier than Cam's 'Superman' or Jerry Rice's 'Cabbage Patch', or Tebow's 'Tebowing', but those are silent celebrations of victory, and Kaep was wrong for mocking Cam, and if he ever speaks out like an idiot I'll call him on it, but he didn't.

We're going to have to agree to disagree here, because Sherman should be smarter than what he did. He's taunted Tom Brady, Trent Williams (who punched him in the face), Skip Bayless, and countless opponents.

You can defend him all you want. He acts like a jerk.

At least Sherman gave the Niners a shout-out...

“The NFC Championship was the Super Bowl,” Sherman says. “The 49ers were the second-best team in the NFL.”

Guess you missed the commentary from your guy Kaep (almost 2 weeks after he threw 2 picks and had a fumble in the 4th Qtr of the NFC championship game) about how all he had to do was "throw the ball 6 inches higher and Sherman would have been the GOAT" or how "Seattle defense has a lot of holes in it.." except HE obviously couldn't find them! LOL..

They all trash talk, saying one is "silent" compared to another is yet another typical sign of the 49er fans refusing to accept that they got beat fair and square and they make excuses for "their guys" and pick and choose the "bad" guys who whooped up on them.

Look up Sherman's interviews. The way he acted after the NFC Championship is typical. Hard to believe he majored in communication.

Kaepernick looks like a fool when he pulls that crap. Newton is no angel after his dad pimped him out to the highest paying college. It will be interesting to see how long Manziel lasts in the NFL with his spoiled act.
