I just discovered that Rancho Cordova has this chat site. I am asking for your support for re-election to the Folsom Cordova School Board. I am endorsed by many RC residents, including DON NOTTOLI, DAVID SANDER, BOB McGARVEY, DAN SKOGLUND, ROGER BENTON, ED SHORT, and the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce.

RE-ELECT TERESA STANLEY TO CONTINUE TO PROMOTE:

* High standards and rigor for all students

* Transparency and accountability in the educational system

* Parental involvement at all stages of education

* Community values in educational programs

* Partnerships that maximize governmental use of your tax dollars

* Relevancy of coursework and classroom activities

* Opportunities for all students to succeed in post-high school education and/or in the business world

I hope to continue to be your voice in providing a top-notch education to the kids of Rancho Cordova and Folsom, and I thank you for your past and future support.

Sorry Teresa, but many parents are very unsatisfied with your performance in the Folsom area. The PTA we're involved in is actively campaigning against you.

Phew, I saw the subject line and thought "Teresa Stanley is endorsing Dyral Abdo (running as 'retired military') for school board -- has she gone 'round the bend?!?" Needless to say, "veteran" is in reference to her BOE experience and not of a military nature. IMHO, Dyral has no business running for dog catcher or paperboy but Teresa has served with distinction for many years and, although I don't always agree with her politics, she listens to others and seems fair in her judgements.

Now I just have to figure out who else I'm going to vote for...

Since you are actively campaiging here, I'd like to know how you are going to change things. The board has not represented FCUSD well recently. How will you fix that? How will you help make our school district competitive with surrounding districts? While our test scores are higher NOW, I worry for the future years.

Thanks.

RE-ELECT TERESA STANLEY TO CONTINUE TO PROMOTE:
I'm sorry, I'm voting against all incumbents. I vote permanent absentee, so it's already a done deal as far as I'm concerned.
I would rather be Backpacking

See my website at teresastanleyforschoolboard.com!

I see among your endorsements few parents, selective teachers, nary any school employees, but many elected officials. Could you please explain to us why elected officials are more willing to come forward to support your campaign than parents, as I am confused now who it is a board trustee truly works for?

Good question. It would also look really bad if her own current board wouldn't support her. If we take out elected officials her list is pretty short!
I'M VOTING FOR JOANNE REINKING!!!

As a parent of 2 FCUSD students I support Teresa Stanley. I'd like to see Leslie Faust run some day. Another good leader.

Just got this email from a friend and thought it had some good points in it. I never knew the board got paid. No matter how you are voting it is good information.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping this email finds everyone healthy. As you all know, this is a very important election time. It will be an interesting night as well as interesting election results.

Everyone also knows that there is an important election for our current FCUSD school board. This is also an important decision, as candidates elected will have a difficult road ahead in keeping our students and families as the primary focus.

Things to keep in mind regarding school board candidates:
Teachers were promised early contract discussions last year if they gave up increase in salaries. The school board failed to meet the early discussions timeline and pushed it back so far that teachers were near striking.

Our Superintendent created a budget, supported by our current School Board, that eliminated third grade class size reduction. This has harmed our students. My son is currently in third grade, and I see the ramifications every day.

Our Superintendent failed to reinstate third grade class size reduction (as promised) when over $800,000 worth of education money came back to our schools this year. The reason: why reinstate when we may have to eliminate again next year.

Our Superintendent last week cut the two safe school officers that patrol our schools in Folsom. He said there was not a need. Personally, I do not understand continued cuts when the budget was already determined and supposedly 'balanced'. This is about school safety. I am very concerned.

I have heard from administration staff that the Superintendent is looking to eliminate second grade class size reduction next year if they have to make significant cuts to the budget again. This harms our students and their ability to learn.
We are the only district in surrounding counties that DID eliminate third grade class size reduction. We are also the only district that has never implemented class size reduction at the Kindergarten level.

Our Superintendent makes 20% over the average salary of Superintendents for a school district size that is comparatively small (only 19,000 students) in relation to Superintendents of larger districts like Placer, San Juan and Elk Grove. But, I don't see him offering to take a pay cut to assist in the budget issues.

Our Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services refused a high level Director position with the State of California Department of Education because she made more money via salary in our smaller district.

Our School Board members are paid $420 a month (12 months a year) to be a School Board member. Most districts do not pay School Board personnel for an elected position. I have also recently found out that our School Board Members are also provided health insurance by our school district. To me, this is appalling. Our students must suffer in the classroom (large class size, reduced resources, no ongoing teacher trainings, etc), but our district believes it should pay and provide health insurance to school board members when other districts do not.

Our current school board authorized a 3 million dollar cost to build a swimming pool at the new High School, that would cost $30,000 a month to operate from our general fund. The pool was opened for one week before permanent closure due to money costs. This pool was a very poor decision. Sorry, I would rather see our district spend $30,000 a month on good quality teachers than a swimming pool.

The school board authorized roofing to the new High School that the architect repeatedly stated was unsound. Thus, the roof has continually leaked (at a brand new school) and now money has to be spent to "re-structurize" the roof to the original architects recommendations. The cost....over 2 million dollars. Does this sound like sound school board decisions?

The list can go on and on, but these are just a few of the key issues.

While I will never tell anyone how to vote, I will give you my personal choice (in case you are wondering) for the FCUSD School Board. That person is Marilyn Maggio. While there are many candidates who have good intentions, I personally believe that Marilyn can face the daunting task of district accountability and administration oversight with the school board.

Personally, I believe the current school board has handed over their "decision making authority" to the administration...and that is wrong. Our school board members should be setting the standards, the budget, and our districts direction...not the administration. At minimum though, there should be more questioning by our school board of budget decisions that impact our kids. We need to ensure that those who are elected to our school board have the ability to stand up and question the current status quo. That is why Marilyn Maggio has my vote. But, I leave everyone to make their own decisions.

Good luck in the upcoming elections.

Best Wishes,
XX

I hope this is just crazy rumors spreading around. THAT would be a serious problem. The second grade class CANNOT have 30+ kids.

Wow, I didn't know that information about the pool. What a shame. I'd like to hear the logic on that one.

See the other thread. Since the letter is wrong about some of the things I know about it's very hard to trust the rest. Personally, I haven't heard anyone support removing 1st or 2nd grade class size reduction. In those grades it is supported by research from what I've heard.

The pool thing is supposedly being worked on with the city of Foslom. It's hard to pay operations money for a pool when sports, music and counselors are being cut and class sizes increased.

Hey, mods, care to merge part of this thread with the other one? biggrin.gif
