Well early this morning at around 4AM the alarm to my house went berserk and off then I notice that the number is the side door of my garage.

It seems that the people who were attempting to get in my garage went through the weak/crappy wooden door fence that everyone usually has to their backyard.

It also seems that no one should have known about this side garage door unless they have taken a peek or seen it earlier.

Before I could get my handgun and go check out what happen I hear my fence door open I check outside and it is way too dark to see anything. My wife and kids were petrified, but my wife had no idea how to deal with what happened (even though she talks about crime and being careful all the time).

I suggest that you should call the police instantly, false alarm or not there is a very slim chance it is a false alarm. 30 Minutes later I hear the alarm to a house down the street go off also.

After about an hour or 2 of searching and looking around we found the wooden door had been opened and someone forced the side door to my garage open.

If they come again, and try to rob my family while we are sleeping I will make sure they don't get away. Shooting them in the leg or not.

Watch out everyone

Was your fence gate locked or not?

Oh, and thanks for the warning.
I would rather be Backpacking

It's one of those fence string locks where you use a screw or something to put in the hole so they can't pull the lock and come in.

Whoever they are, thought I was an easy target. If they do come in again, they will be wrong.

I'd aim a little higher than that. You'd be perfectly justified.

Sorry to hear of that, but glad you're all OK. We have a motion sensor light so if anyone comes through the gate (though it's usually locked) or tries to go through the side garage door the light will come on. The hope is that it will freak them out, though of course I guess it could just light their way...

Thanks for the warning. If something like that happened to me I doubt I would be able to sleep well for a month.

Just one thing. Before you go shooting into the dark, Tex, please make sure your wife and all your kids are accounted for.

I had a motion sensor light before, but had to take it off due to it malfunction and going haywire during high winds and such.

It seems like prairie oaks would be an easy place to be burglarized due to it being so close to the freeway and all.

And if I did have to protect my household and family I'm sure I would let my wife and kids stay hiding somewhere behind 3 locked doors in a closet behind some clothes calling the police. I'm sure I would account for them

Perhaps, but I think the majority of garages these days have side entrances.

Put it back on! It is one of the best deterrents. Burglars like to work in the dark, or with a small flashlight. Besides, the burglar doesn't take time to consider whether the light came on because of a motion sensor or because the homeowner turned it on.

Perhaps, but the vast majority of burglaries are done by young males, usually teens, in their own neighborhoods.

I think I'll put one up by my gate/side garage door. Not sure why I haven't already done this. Any recommendations, or are they all about the same ??

well there's dual ones, rotating ones, solar powered ones, halogen ones.. etc

most of them require no electricians, very easy installation

they're all basically the same

My dogs bark anytime anyone comes within 10 feet of our house, best darn house alarm you could ever want.

Did you call the police and did they also check your neighbors house? I wonder how many houses they tried to hit last night.

We are'nt in the same neighborhood.....and it could be a coincidence....but our side gate was opened the other morning. A neighbor came to tell me b/c we have a dog who goes outside, so he didn't want him to get out. Asked hubby if he opened it and he said no....
I'm so going to get a lock today.....

I don't lock the gate, but I have one of the garbage cans pushed up against it. Hey, if they wanna get in your backyard bad enough, they'll just jump the fence anyway. And at night they won't push the gate with that garbage can in the way...makes too much noise.

Yes they are all the same, they are all GHETTO. Make sure to point yours right at your neighbor's bedroom window as well so that when a cat or raccoon walks by it turns on for 30 minutes at 4am.
