I've been hearing about this flu season and what problems they've been having down in Southern Cal.

Seems they can't get enough flu medication in stock and they have hospitals packed with flu victims, to the point, they have to turn some away.

I thought it may be helpful to have a discussion/reporting of flu symptoms and suggestions/support for flu victims. School will be back in session for many starting tomorrow...that means many more will catch the flu.

I haven't had it and hope to escape it this time around because it sounds like a very nasty bug!  I plan on wearing gloves and a mask to cover my nose and mouth when I have to go out. What are your plans to protect yourself, and your loved ones, from catching the flu?

I get a flu shot every year. I skipped a few years ago and got the flu.

Hand washing is a big part of prevention, and of course, avoiding sick people.

My wife and I were walking down the street last month, and a guy did a disgusting open air sneeze 10 feet ahead of us. I don't know if he's the reason she got sick, but she did.

For me, flu shots are mandatory.  They say the shots this year are not that effective but will help lessen the effects if you do get the flu  Looks like it's gonna be a nasty flu season.  Stay healthy everyone!

I generally am exposed to a lot of germs. I rarely get sick. I don't think I've taken a sick day at work in years. I think it has to do with exposing my immune system to lots of garbage, but that may just be me rationalizing.  Either way, I never get the flu shot and I am very rarely sick. Luck? Who knows...

You're probably right about exposures over time.  I'm old and I've had every disease in the world, and am now immune to all of them.  I never get a flu shot, and have not had the flu in the past 25 years.  It'll be the same this year.  A comforting predictability.

Gee, that situation with the guy who sneezed sounds disgusting!   Hope your wife didn't suffer too badly with the flu.

My husband was sick about a week ago and we couldn't figure if it was the flu or allergies.  He was congested and coughed and sneezed but had no body aches or fever.  It lasted about three days and he was fully back to his old self after the fourth.

Both my brother and his wife got flu shots in different years and both got the flu a few days after.  They say they'll never get the flu shots again.

I've never gotten flu shots. I don't think they work. This year they admit they have a very low efficacy rating and blame that on the fact that they were wrong about how the flu would mutate.

Question:  Wouldn't it be possible that with the CDC combining different flu virus strains to develop a flu shot and then people getting the flu from that shot, that would present a danger for a more deadly type of flu virus to grow out in the public? Doctors say that people can't get the flu from a flu shot, but I have seen evidence that they can because my family members have in the past.

Stay well everyone!  :)

I heard that the more you are exposed to children, the more you get sick, because they catch everything and past it along to the adults in their lives. Maybe you just aren't around children very much?

Same with me. The last time I had the flu real bad was back around 1995 or so. I have not had a flu shot since, and I have not had the flu since. I can handle getting a bad cold every year... big deal.. but I never get the flu. Big difference.

I am a bit anxious about it, because my boss (who's pretty healthy) had it over New Years, and she was really really sick for 2 weeks.

I didn't get the flu shot because I read how ineffective it would be this year.  Now they are saying everyone should have gotten the flu shot.  I'm kind of mad they are flipflopping and now blaming the public for not getting flu shots.

The problem with flu shots is they are designed to make you immune to last year's flu.  Here's how it works - Flu vaccines are comprised of dead viruses from last year's flu.  They're injected into your body and the body reacts by developing an immunity to that virus.  Because the virus is dead, you don't actually get sick.  All is good - except when last year's virus mutates on the back streets of some third world country and becomes the new virus this year.  Your immunity developed from a shot of last year's virus may not be very effective against the new mutated strain, so you may get sick even if you get a shot this year.  Apparently that's what's happening now.  In some years, the mutation may be very minor and the inoculation of last year's virus can help prevent symptoms.  But that's not the case this year.

I think there's a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about the flu shot.

I got an email this morning from a guy who said not to get them because they are nothing but a profit center for big pharma.

I have no problem with people making a profit on their products or services, but many organizations give free immunizations.

When you talk to a professional and say, 'I got a flu shot and then got sick', the most common responses seem to be:

* You were probably already infected, in which case the shot came too late

* What you got sick with wasn't the flue

* The flu shot addresses what the medical world believes to be the most common strain. You must have gotten another one.

So, I was my hands, get a flu shot and hope for the best.

The only flu I got over the past 10 years or so was the one year I didn't get the shot.

Just read the latest on the flu situation and it sounds pretty bad. Debating on whether to get a flu shot isn't going to help anyone at this point.  Although getting a flu shot just may weaken your immune system for a while and may not be a good idea with the flu season in full blown mode.

Hand washing and avoiding sick people is fine, but what about taking the extra measures that could actually save you from getting the flu?  For myself, wearing a mask and gloves while in public places, with many others walking around, is going to be my protection for the next month or so.  That may sound extreme, but I'm not willing to take a chance with my life; people are dying out there and have done all the right things.  And if those who care about others would do the same, the death rate might go down. You would be willing to take precautions for the sake of others?  Think about it...the people who have died from the flu got it from somebody.  How would you sleep at night knowing that you gave somebody the flu and they died?

I'm not going to eat out or go where I don't have to and wear my mask and gloves everywhere outside my home. At work I wear my mask and gloves and have been told I'm causing concern to other workers.  I told my boss he can send me home, or he can face a lawsuit, because I have a right to protect myself from a deadly flu.

And a message to all who will call me names and scoff at the measures I'm taking. My brother's good friend just died from this flu.  She was just 54 years old and had gotten her flu shot in Sept. of 2017. Now three kids have no mother. She went to the doctor right away and he said go home, rest and get plenty of fluids. The next day she died.

Get serious about this flu people!  Doctors won't be able to help you after you get sick!  Not everyone will die of the flu, but you might.

And I read this hasn't reached a peak yet. So things may get much worse before they get better.

Oh, and people over 65 should definitely wear masks and gloves!

I wish you you all good health.
