The Bear and the Atheist
An atheist was walking through the woods one day, admiring all that evolution had created. Suddenly he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. Turning to look, he saw an 8 foot grizzly bear beginning to charge toward him.

He ran as fast as he could down the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was rapidly closing on him Running faster yet, he looked again and the bear was even closer. His heart was pounding in his chest. He tried to run faster. But alas, he tripped and fell to the ground.

As he rolled over to pick himself up, the bear was right over him, reaching for him with its left paw and raising its right paw to strike him. The atheist cried..."OH MY GOD!"

Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving. As a brilliant light shone upon the man, a thunderous voice came from the sky.

"YOU DENY MY EXISTENCE FOR ALL THESE YEARS, TEACH OTHERS THAT I DON'T EXIST AND EVEN CREDIT CREATION TO SOME COSMIC ACCIDENT. NOW, YOU EXPECT ME TO HELP YOU AND DAMN THIS BEAR? AM I TO COUNT YOU AS A CHRISTIAN?"

The atheist looked directly into the light and said, "Why don't you try and make the bear a Christian?"
"VERY WELL," said the voice. The light went out. The river ran. The sounds of the forest resumed. ... and the bear dropped down to his knees, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke: "Lord, thank you for this food which I am about to receive."

That's a GOOD one! LOL! I'd not heard it before!!!!! LOL!

I am God...as long as I hold the remote control.

I can record the past, stop things in time, plus go into the future!

I can even be in two places at one time! With dual screens, of course.

But when I point my remote at my wife coming at me with a chore to do, sadly, it doesn't work.

I NEED a new type of remote control!!!!! FAST!!!!

uh--did you mean "non-secular"?

Anyway, while I was stationed in Germany a friend told me that it is mandatory to pay a minimum of a %10 tax on a religious church. I said really? I thought most of Germany was protestant, where tithes are collected in the church; and she said oh, yes you are supposed to pay those to the minister, as well.

I have heard that about Germany.

However, what I was referring to is that in many countries in Europe (including the UK, France, and even Ireland) the majority of people report no religious affiliation, and church attendance is through the floor. I believe this is even true in Germany (though I'd have to look it up) -- the church tax is an old law, but most people don't actually attend church anymore.

Please give us some examples of what you would consider "miraculous".

I guess it matters what you consider miraculous. I've never had anything happen that appeared to not have a natural, rational explanation.

I do consider myself to be incredibly lucky in life though (health, family, work, etc.), but that hardly seems miraculous.

People are never consistent in what they attribute to God.

I've had many wonderful things happen in my life. I am as thankful for those things as any religious person -- I try never to take for granted the good things that happen in life.

At the same time, if I attributed those good things to God's interference, then I would also have to blame him for all the terrible things I see: a friend's child suffering a painful disease; a child who never knows the security of a 2-parent family because her parents divorce acrimoniously; a family victimized by a dishonest employee.

After a while, God doesn't seem so great anymore. Or maybe, he just doesn't interfere in our lives day by day as people seem to assume.

I cringe when I hear people rationalize awful things as some greater plan of God: "Well, it was terrible she got cancer, but it was God's way of helping her see what was really important in life." We don't talk that way about people: "Well, it was awful that he murdered your sister, but at least his actions helped you appreciate your remaining siblings more." --So, why do we give God -- who supposedly is powerful enough to do ANYTHING -- so much leeway?

I was speaking specifically of the idea of the Trinity.

Was it at the Council of Nicaea in 325 when the Trinity dogma was solidified?
