Not sure if anyone else has been following the benefit event this Saturday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash's famous concert at Folsom Prison.  It sounds really unique.  It starts with family members and friends of Johnny and his wife, June Carter, mixing with everyone at an exhibit of artifacts and momentos of his.  This reception is up by the Steak House on Sutter Street and Karen's Bakery is serving appetizers and drinks.  After the reception, everyone walks down to Karen's Bakery for the same people singing and telling stories of their family memories.  Its from 4 pm to 8 pm.  They are calling it the Storytellers Evening.  Its a benefit for the Music in Education non-profit organization.  Its not cheap, $105 per person, but it sounds pretty cool.

I hope they do well, but I think their marketing is confusing. If this is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash recording Folsom Prison Blues, perhaps they should work the title around that.

On calendars and the website, the headline reads 'Story Tellers Evening'.

If I were just glancing through events, such as on Eventbrite, that's the line I'd see, and I'd pass on it.

Perhaps 'Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Johnny Cash' Folsom Prison Blues' or 'Johnny Cash' Folsom Prison Blues 50th Anniversary Celebration'

The subhead ads to the confusion by saying, 'Life on the Road with the Man in Black and other tales from the First Family of Country Music'.  That makes it sound like you'll be sitting in an room or auditorium listening to stories about Johnny Cash.

That indeed may be part of it, but I think most appealing would be the facts that the event is features a reception with booze and food, a display of a never before seen collection of Cash memorabilia, the opportunity to meet some of Cash's family, and listen to live music (hopefully Cash music).

This is followed by walk down to Karen's Bakery for dinner, and that's where some stories will be told.

If I asked, 'Hey, do you want to go to 'Story Teller's evening?'  Would that appeal to a lot of people?

Maybe I've given it too much thought, I don't know.

I'm with you Steve. I saw Story Tellers Evening and never read any further. After reading 4th Gen's description of the event I'm sorry I didn't make plans to go.

I agree 100%. I didn't even hear about another linked event called Poets and Pioneers until Friday morning and when I read the description, I immediately bought two tickets for that one too. They held it at Lakeside Church and it was barely half full. Yet it was one of the best performances I have ever seen in Folsom.  Authentic roots music with over 15 excellent singers and musicians, plus Ronnie Williams and Lorrie Carter Bennett, who is June and John Cash's niece. Both of them toured with Johnny Cash for years. Musicians who had flown in from throughout the country. Amazing music.

And I went to the Saturday night event too. Started at the Sutter street steakhouse with appetizers, 1.5 hours of up close and personal music, drinks and great appetizers, then two-hour dinner with music and Lorrie and Ronnie telling cute and funny Johnny Cash and June Carter stories. Nothing felt canned. It was authentic and amazing.

If anyone is interested, they are performing again at the Crest Theater and if you are even a little interested, don't wait, GO!

I agree, lame title. The Folsom Biz Expo had a similar problem. It's name was instantly forgettable.

How was the turnout?

It was intended to be intimate.  Karen's Bakery felt full.  I think they had a limit of 60 and I think there were about 44 or so there.  Excellent evening.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
