So my daughter just bought an HDTV at Walmart. The posted price was $286. At checkout they added $16 for a RECYCLING FEE? For the STYROFOAM in the SEALED BOX? What gives?? She didn't even ask for a BAG!

Are you sure it's not some sort of e-waste recycling fee?

How Much Do I Collect?

There are three different fees charged to customers dependent on the viewable diagonal screen size of the covered electronic device. The amount that must be collected increases as of January 1, 2009; the old and new fee structures are given below;
Viewable screen size, measured diagonally Current Fee as of 01/01/09
Greater than 4" but less than 15" $6 $8
15" or more but less than 35" $8 $16
35" or more $10 $25

The fee must be separately stated on the invoice to the customer. A retailer may retain 3 percent of the covered electronic waste recycling fee as reimbursement for all costs associated with the collection of the fee; this need not be separately stated on the invoice to the consumer. Since the fee represents an obligation on the retailer to collect from the consumer and not, therefore, a retail expense, the amount of the fee is exempted from the sales and use tax imposed on the gross receipts of retailers. This holds true regardless of whether the retailer is collecting directly from the customer or utilizing the optional regulations allowing vendors to voluntarily collect and remit the fee on behalf of a lessor.

Welcome to California, huh?

Wonder if you get charged that if you buy online?

That's a state of California thing - every LCD/TV etc gets charged a recycling fee. They say the reason behind it is because people were dumping TV sets/LCD's etc and it costs money to recycle those so now California is charging those fees up front.

I sell PC's and LCD's etc and I have to charge my customers those fees too and the state gets on me to pay those fees to them quarterly.

Gotta luv California and the ever growing taxes and costs....

Yes, you do get charged for it online as well.

So, what's she doing with the world's largest tv that she has now? J/K

Sold it on CL for $100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO

Well I guess 2 things that bothered me about the whole thing are that she was told it was for the STYROFOAM at the register, and there was no mention of it where they actually sold the TVs, unless of course they didn't notice it which is highly likely.

Well this WAS Walmart right? I'm not surprised by the description at the register, based on where bought. That would be annoying, especially if you have not bought a TV since the Regs. came out.
