New Orleans Braces for Powerful Katrina

NEW ORLEANS - A monstrous Hurricane Katrina barreled toward New Orleans on Sunday with 165-mph wind and a threat of a 28-foot storm surge, forcing a mandatory evacuation of the below-sea-level city and prayers for those who remained to face a doomsday scenario.

My cousin's wife has to stay behind, as she is a nurse working in a hospital there.

A sensible person would bury their dead in a cheap wooden box so as to disintegrate faster.

Although I've often said that if God doesn't destroy New Orleans, He owes Sodom and Gamorah a big apology, it looks like they got really really lucky this time. The Hurricane veered east at the last moment. It could have been much worse.
Of course, that's bad news for the Biloxi and Mobile area. Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL (just east of Mobile and refered to there as the "Redneck Riviera") got hit hard by Ivan last year and now this. We vacationed in Gulf Shores last summer about a week before Ivan hit. The hotel where we stayed is gone. They're having a tough year down there.
ps: kidding about that Sodom and Gamorah thing - I really like that whole NO area

Can't remember the article, but some scientist calculated that we are going to be seeing more frequent and stronger hurricanes in that part of the country for the next few decades.

Everyone is fine, thanks. They really spread out. Some in Houston, some in Atlanta and some in a small town in Arkansas. My uncle left for Houston yesterday at 8am, got there at 4 the this morning.
I've seen lots of pictures. Terrible damage. The place was truly swamped.
It looks like a long recovery.

Yeah, it's strange. I don't remember the last hurricane to hit the east/southeast coast. The big ones have all been going up the gulf it seems.
