Well, I went there again tonight. I had some time to kill and decided what the heck, why not go for a Margarita?
So I ordered a Margarita and a plate of shredded chicken tacos with beans and rice (Not street tacos).
The Margarita was tasty, and for me, quite strong. I didn't finish it all. Not that I didn't like it, but after ordering, I realized, I should go easy until the food hits my stomach.
I alternated between Margarita and ice water as I chomped on a taco. I ate about half the salad that sat atop it. The appeal of the plate itself was welcoming. The cheesy lettuce and onion was a nice fresh start before getting down to the business of the taco. The taco was a corn tortilla and nicely shaped. The texture was not wet (I hate when tacos disintegrate in your hands), nor was it too crispy or brittle ( I also hate wondering if I'm going to choke on a shard of stale tortilla). The potato and shredded meat went down well. Now I have to say, I happen to be a bit picky about my "Mexican" food. By American standards, "Mexican" food has to have a new, sharp, and strong herb taste that often over balances the ingredients of a traditional Mexican supper. Q'Bole put together a nice taco plate without burning my tongue, or making my gut seize with acid indigestion. To sum it up: they put together a taco plate that looked appealing and offered a traditional hum to your senses without being over-powered. One other thing I particularly liked about Q'bole was their salsa and chips. Specifically their salsa. Not too spicy, not too sweet. The only complaint I would have was the portion size of the platter was just too large. For a $4 dollar Margarita (served in a soda glass) and a $13 taco plate, I was over-served and had to bring the left overs home. I muttered about the unfairness of not being able to take my drink to go, and accepted my bag of left overs and a giant burrito for my son.
My Server was also the barman. I believe his name was Nundo. I might have misspelled that (I'm sorry if I did!). He was pleasant and quick to guess my needs. I neither felt rushed nor forced to wait overly long on my food. As I left to go to my next appointment I made sure to tell him I would be writing a description of the meal here - on the website.
Again, I went to Q'bole during off peak times and found two or three other people while I was there. I particularly liked the large glass backed bar and the impressive array of liquor bottles. I will have to try more than the margaritas, next time. I sat at a table with high legs and a wide contoured back which gave me a nice seat to watch the college ball game that was on. I like the way the restaurant was set to give privacy to tables away from the television and bar area, and the main front entrance. The large windows and tables in the room were separated by a half wall along the length of the bar. An outdoor patio over-looking Sutter Street promises a fun and airy meal in good weather.
The next time I go, I would like to order the red snapper. The menu made it sound like a fantastic taste bud experience.
