So I got a new laptop about a month ago. 2 weeks after receiving it I started getting the blue screen of death that automatically shuts down the system to prevent any damage from occuring on the hard drive (first it was because of the bluetooth driver I had pre-installed, now it's happening when I try to shut down).

I was on the phone with tech support, but it hasn't really fixed the problem (they had me do a system reset). Anyone know of any other ways to fix the problem or should I send the laptop back and ask for a new one?

What operating system are you using? And systems usually do not shut down after a BSOD, they hang there until you power them down. And a BSOD won't damage the hard drive, not sure you are understanding the 2 items aren't related. Unless by damage you mean corrupting your OS?

Did you remove the driver that caused your initial problem?

Dav, he can barely find the on/off switch and you want him to load Linux? Seriously?

windows is a virus, it'd be worth the learning struggle to get away from it.

Really now? And how did you come to that conclusion?

Been there don't that. Worked for about 4 hours then was back to the blue screen.

It's a dell (I never had problems with the previous laptop).

Contact Mel at PC Fix-it Live. He does this type of work. If you can get online with the laptop, he does the diagnosis/repair from his location. He's a member of the Folsom Business Club and his contact info is here:

Even if he can't help you, he will gladly point you in the right direction.

Contact Dell again. They will either fix it, or replace the computer. It may be a hardware fault causing the BSOD memory dump.

As for the poster who said the computer should not shut down after a BSOD, it depends on what is selected in Windows in regards to BSOD's. If "Shut down the computer" is selected, then it will shut down. I do not believe that is the default setting, but it might be direct from Dell.

it's the new inspiron. The message was first about the bluetooth thing that came installed with the my laptop.

after about 2 weeks of that message it now appears when I try to shutdown the system.

When I talked w/ tech support, they "updated" the BIOS (the version they did the update with was the same version I already had). When the person realized that she had me do a system reset so it went back to how it was when I first got the laptop.

Now I don't get the blue screen for bluetooth anymore, just every once in a while when I try to shut down.

Sorry, to sound like I'm gloating...but I am glad I'm not a PC user anymore! Gave up the PC completely 5 years ago and do not miss it at all!
My PowerBook G4 (apple computers) has not crashed even once in 5 years!
Go for a Mac - you will not regret it!
