I found this online. Don't know if it's the latest version.

Standard of Conduct:

While criminal activity is clearly outside the scope of permissible conduct, and persons who engage in criminal activity will be subject to discipline, the standard of conduct for persons employed in the NFL is considerably higher. It is not enough simply to avoid being found guilty of a crime. Instead, as an employee of the NFL or a member club, you are held to a higher standard and expected to conduct yourself in a way that is responsible, promotes the values upon which the League is based, and is lawful. Persons who fail to live up to this standard of conduct are guilty of conduct detrimental and subject to discipline, even where the conduct itself does not result in conviction of a crime. Discipline may be imposed in any of the following circumstances:

    Criminal offenses including, but not limited to, those involving: the use or threat of violence; domestic violence and other forms of partner abuse; theft and other property crimes; sex offenses; obstruction or resisting arrest; disorderly conduct; fraud; racketeering; and money laundering;
    Criminal offenses relating to steroids and prohibited substances, or substances of abuse;
    Violent or threatening behavior among employees, whether in or outside the workplace;
    Possession of a gun or other weapon in any workplace setting, including but not limited to stadiums, team facilities, training camp, locker rooms, team planes, buses, parking lots, etc., or unlawful possession of a weapon outside of the workplace;
    Conduct that imposes inherent danger to the safety and well being of another person; and
    Conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.

I had lunch with a jazz singer yesterday. We talked about a lot of stuff, and she asked me how I could watch football after what Ray McDonald and Ray Rice have done.

I told her that I didn't think those guys were representative of pro football, and that I wouldn't stop listening to jazz if a jazz musician were to beat his wife, although I may stop listening to that particular one.

To Steve's original question:  I think the difference is that professional sports teams are employers, whereas movie stars sign on to individual projects.  I have no problem if an employer with a public image decides to fire an employee for that kind of conduct.  What I don't understand is why this has blown up into such a big and protracted media story.  Honestly, I didn't even know who Ray Rice was before this story (you can tell I don't closely follow the NFL).  I also don't feel the need to compare punishments across the entertainment world, as in "Hey, what I did was wrong, but look at the other guy's punishment!"  Just deal with the consequences of your own actions.  My guess is that he'll be playing football again and raking in the big bucks, and that one day he'll beat his wife again.

You got your Boxing Gloves too???

A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

The sad part is that the dumbshart girlfriend married him after that.........!   Get knocked out really means he loves you....?   No way.   She's on her own after that.   Do that to my daughter and you would have to deal with me very soon and very often.  Don't care if you are 6 four and 230.   I will be after you really hard and you have to put me to the floor, out cold to stop me.   Might happen a lot, several times until I get out of ICU but I will be on you every time I see you.   Really don't like this guy.......    Not at all........    Chris

You don't see these behaviors to this extent in baseball because most players who are fortunate enough to land a coveted scholarship actually attend class, don't enter the draft early, and graduate. In baseball the system is geared toward keeping the player hungry, literally, until they reach the major league. More positive life experiences contributes to better character.
