Niche.com has declared something many of us already knew; Folsom is a great place to raise a family.

Folsom was noted for having high home values, good schools, low crime, an educated work force and high incomes, earning an A+ rating, and ranking 7th in the state.

While we'll take the good publicity, they seem to have gotten some things wrong. For example, they say Folsom unemployment is at 6.3%, but the city website says it is 4.5%.

Niche says Folsom has 'very high' home values, and looking at Folsom homes for sale, we find that prices are higher than most other communities in the region, but homes are still affordable, and priced far lower than some of the other highly ranked cities, such as Palo Alto and Mountain View.

Whatever the case, Folsom has consistently been highly ranked by CNN Money, Best Places, Nerd Wallet and others.

See the link for complete Niche rankings and methodology.

What do you think, did they get it right?

I'm curious as to how unemployment numbers are calculated. If they come from how many people are claiming unemployment benefits, then that would produce artificially low numbers (in my opinion); not everyone who loses a job is eligible for unemployment or goes ahead and claims those benefits; some go to their savings while job hunting or cut corners in order to get by on one income during the job hunt.

We are happy here in Folsom. Although, it is becoming too congested for my liking, there are too many other plusses that outweigh going through the hassle of pulling up roots and moving elsewhere.

As to one of the best places for raising a family, we're not doing that so can't comment.

We've lived in Folsom for over 24 years now. It has been a wonderful community in which to raise a family. Yes, it has become more populated, but that has enabled more diverse businesses to move in. I remember needing to go to Sacramento for nearly everything.

As an aside, I'm from Chicago; by comparison Folsom isn't congested. :)

As another aside, I lived in Chicago for six years while working my way through University. Didn't own a car or need one as I could walk or take the bus or El anywhere I needed to go; while I'm not one for big city living, the walkability and good public transportation made it doable. It was fun while it lasted (HAH!), but I wouldn't go back to that weather for anything!!!

I love the weather here in Folsom and the easy access to so many points of interest in Northern California (foothills, Tahoe, Bay Area, etc.). Heck, I feel like I'm on vacation every time I walk or bike the two miles or so from my front door to the American River trail! We really do have it made living here in Folsom.

There was another report, another company a few months ago that rated Rancho Cordova higher than Folsom. So, I guess it all depends on who is creating the survery and what they are measuring.

Folsom is one of the better places to live in the Sacto region. I like it, overall. It's not crowded compared to LA, but there still is a lot of traffic and bad drivers. More than I prefer. I think the entire transit system in the region is poorly designed, so many opportunities to create more roads bought off by developers/city councils.

Shhh....dont advertise that article.
