The Classic Gaming Expo will be taking place this year in San Francisco (instead of Vegas) on August 20th and 21st. If you have any interest in classic gaming, you should definitely consider attending. Vendors usually carry lots of classic systems and games (2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, etc.) as well as showing off some new games for older systems (people are still developing for the 2600!).

There's also lots of speakers that vary from incredibly interesting to excrutiatingly boring (want to talk to the guy who wrote Yar's Revenge for the 2600?).

Check it out

Rusty Griswold: Hey, ya' got Pac Man?
Cousin Dale: No.
Rusty Griswold: Ya' got Space Invaders?
Cousin Dale: Nope.
Rusty Griswold: Ya' got Asteroids?
Cousin Dale: Naw, but my dad does. Can't even sit on the toilet some days.

On my first date with my wife, she beat me at a game of 'Tank', but I beat her on 'Pong'.

Ahh, the good old days. The controller consisted of a joystick and a fire button, until they came out with the one with a little knob to turn for driving games and such.

My favorites from my old Atari systems were, Boxing, Space Invaders, Kaboom, and Chopper Command.

I still remember waiting for Pac Man to come out for the 2600...waiting months and months until finally it shipped. I didn't have a 2600, so I had to make a trip over to a friend's house that did have it...oh what a disappointment.

And remember Adventure!

9 Year Old Me: Wow, "Adventure", is that like D&D or something?
Friend (liar): Yeah it's totally cool.
Me: Great, let's check it out.
Friend: Okay, here you go. (inserts Adventure cartridge)
Me: Okay, where am I on the screen.
Friend: Right there in the middle.
Me: I don't see my character, all I see is that little dot...

(two minutes later)

Me: Why is there a giant duck attacking me?

Did you ever notice the sound f/x from that dismal pac-man game are the de facto video game sounds in almost every movie and tv show?

We won a 2600 on the radio when PacMan just came out and played it until like 2 AM that night. Those were the days. Pitfall was my favorite, though Combat was always the bomb.

I used to love playing the racquetball tanks and pinning some guy so by the time he stopped spinning, BLAM! he gets hit again. Ah memories.

No, I've never noticed that. Must be some sort of inside joke.

Ah the good old days when you can spend a quarter and be entertained for hours.

I was best at Asteroids - once played for 8hrs straight on a single quarter, but I enjoyed so many of the classics.

Pac-Man - back in the day, at the start of a game if you moved right and up and didn't touch it again, you could be there forever. I won $20 bucks one afternoon at an arcade contest with this maneuver.

Space Invaders was fun, though I could never manage to get any good at it - same with Donkey Kong.

Galaga and Defender were 2 others that I remember enjoying.

Curiosity and interest in how the games worked, is what led to my entering the field of technology and the rest is history.
