Sure I am. I'd be a hypocrite not to, wouldn't I?
The Democratic party of yesteryear was a conservative, whites-only party, dedicated promoting and protecting that segregationist way of life, while the Republicans were the radical progressives of the day. They wanted hope and change.
In time, conservative Democrats, Dixiecrats and 'States Rights' Democrats jumped ship and went to the Republican party. Strom Thurmond and David Duke are notable examples. Others, like Robert Byrd and Al Gore Sr., though segregationist, remained Democrats.
Today, it seems that most admitted white racists are republican, and I think it's probably fair to say that most black racists lean Democrat.
You don't have to prove anything to me. I paid attention in school, and educated myself further.
I won't ask that you criticize anyone.
Nicely put.
STEVE, THE ONLY PEOPLE I CRITICIZE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO OBSESS OVER RACE IN OUR SOCIETY (I.E: OBAMA, SHARPTON, JACKSON, BLACK LIVES MATTER, LA RAZA, MOST DEMOCRATS, AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA).
AND FINALLY, ANYONE WHO HAS A *MELTDOWN* OVER THE CONFEDERATE FLAG IS SIMPLY A *DRAMA QUEEN* SEEKING ATTENTION.
I only hate people who post in all Caps... unfortunately, there's no flag for that.

Problem solved. They made him an offer he couldn't refuse so he took early retirement. Good riddance. We have to remember that racists will always push the envelope and act like they don't know what they did was wrong. That's why he brought in both flags. That's why he didn't seek permission first. The guy had a history. I don't care how nice he was or how many times he wanted to apologize. The family he offended in the first incident wouldn't even accept his apology. That shows how offended they were. Same with this symbol of hate he brought in. He knows he did wrong too. That's why he retired. Would you retire if you felt wronged?
I don't care how many kids had "fun" either. Kids can be cruel too and I will bet after class some of them taunted and bullied kids of color. I went to school too. In today's world we have learned for the most part our mistakes from the past and act accordingly.
Why are so many kids walking out of their classrooms today when this racist clown is being sworn in? So that they don't have to put up with crap in their classrooms like this teacher in Folsom brought. I will bet he was emboldened by Trumps win like many racists are. Just look at this forum and you see how racists have come out of the shadows. Taken their white sheeted hoods off. Folsom did the right thing pushing this teacher out.
Btw, hey there Ghost. Good to see you sniping from the cheap seats again. Miss you in the politics section.lol

All this nonsense makes me wonder what the outcome would be if this happened in Rancho or a South Sac school. The parents would have shrugged it off and made no big deal about it.
Folsom is so uptight and white the people are just looking for something to complain about just to get an epic Facebook thread going. That is if there aren't young drivers and traffic to complain about.

Jumping to more conclusions about what a racist Mr Hart was and why he retired. Only fact here is we lost another good teacher. Our kids need to learn this stuff in middle school and a little shock value is needed to pry their faces away from social media. My biggest concern raising my daughter here in Folsom was the lack of diversity and not having enough Mr Harts to prepare her for the real world. My parents were both teachers. I sometimes thought my Dad was kind of mean and an (censored). When he died there was a huge memorial and all these amazing people came and spoke. Civil rights leaders, community organizers, Cesar Chavez activists, political activists, advocates for the homeless and mentally ill and his students and colleagues from 35 years of teaching. It was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen. He had an impact on so many people. A lot of people talked about how my Dad pissed a lot of people off by doing the right thing instead of accepting things the way they were. I talked to a lot of his students who said he was the best teacher they ever had. My Dad had been such a role model in the community and was busy all the time. I took him for granted. At that moment I realized his actions had impacted me on a daily basis and is a big part of who I am and how I see the world.
Just a reminder for all us parents. We have more power than we realize. The Mr Harts and my Dad are part of the process of a rounded education but it starts at home.

You know he's been teaching the same lesson (Union versus Confederates) for years, right? There was never any problem before. Why would he suddenly think it is wrong this year?
Not sure whether he used the flags but if he has been doing this then I would guess, and it's just a guess that they were watching him since his lynching comments? If that is not the case then maybe it's been all the racial strife this past year in our country. Also, we have a racist as president now. He would not even rent to blacks back in the day and has stirred up hate for the last year for all people considered "other" than white?
I am just not sure BCF why but maybe all of the above?

So it sounds like there was some kind of personal vendetta at work among the staff...

I think we all agree that the civil war should be taught...warts and all. It's one of the most important periods in our country's history.
I have trouble with the idea that showing students a picture of the confederate flag is ok but letting them see it in cloth form is way out of bounds.

Another fact: He has an African-American grandson who he dotes on. People who know him cite this as additional evidence that he is not a racist person.

Steve Heard is one of the "good people"..not sure why anyone would yell at him here...but I digress:

Thank you sir!
I understand that reasoning, and think there has to be more to the story.

I know that didn't happen but to listen to some that would be fine too. As they think the flag is fine. It isn't fine.
Both examples above are a reminder of horrible pasts. Those things are tough enough to read about and learn from books. Having it in their faces as the real thing would be downright horrifying for most I would think. Empathy good people of Folsom. What you think is ok is NOT ok to those who's people were victims. And there is STILL racism from white extremist groups who embrace that flag today. There is STILL anti semitism as well and a swaztica hurts people. They don't need to see their teacher or another student wearing an arm band. The word is empathy!

Chris, the answer then is to offend NO ONE. especially in the public square. The key point I make here is this man has a history. This wasn't a mistake or lapse in judgement. He is now a repeat offender. We must agree to disagree on this one my man.
Trails, you're going to have to back down on this one. The free speech clause of the 1st amendment allows and protects speech, even if it's offensive. to be honest, the 1st amendment was written to specifically protect offensive speech. And the more offensive the speech, the more important it is to protect it. You want to offend NO ONE? then don't speak at all. It would be the exact opposite of free speech. And the public square is the place where free speech is to be exercised. The Constitution applies on any public property in the country. You're up against some of the basic laws of the land, and you aren't going to win.
Nothing in the Constitution prevents you, or anyone else, from being offended. And if you don't like it, you have recourse. Put together a grass roots movement to overturn the 1st amendment. See how far you get. The university nutballs have been trying to get speech codes installed for decades. Every time they end up in court, they lose. The 1st amendment is extremely powerful, so look out.

WDYT, I agree with what you said. I think I should have been more specific about the Public Square. By that I meant the schools and Gov't buildings basically. Like in S. Carolina where they just removed the Confederate Flag. My point was that those who pay taxes should not be subjected to hurtful things, no matter how many find them ok.
Didn't they remove God from the public square? A HUGE mistake btw. Why though? For those who don't believe who are a tiny minority.
I think the streets and our homes are all fair game for protests and likes of our choice. A kid though in school should not have stuff like this shoved in their faces. A person going to a gov't building should not have to see the Rebel Flag. Props to Niki Haley.
Other than that I agree with you as I said. If this post doesn't clear it up for you just let me know my man. I am willing to discuss further. Unlike others who have no skills you bring a lot to the table and I do appreciate your input.
