In general, we aren't very good stewards of our land. Personal freedom vs sustainability and respect for the natural land often at at odds.

While somewhat true that there can be conflicts, I am living proof that all those priorities can coexist. I have an intense desire for personal freedom, and sustainability. I also have a deep respect for nature. Why? Because I (like many) not only believe in personal freedom, but also believe in personal RESPONSIBILITY.
I believe in using our resources, but doing so responsibly. Simple.

I like how you said you are a true conservative. My father, big Republican, was too and always reminded me what the conversation movement was all about and that it was originally the Republican's domain. We grew up recycling cans, turning off lights, turning down the heat, usual a/c sparingly, conserving water and any other resource (money, too) because my parents believed waste was inherently wrong. They taught me to believe we have a responsibility to avoid waste and that our actions affect others, that our personal wants did not trump the big picture. I try my best!

I remember asking a couple of years ago how often other Folsom Forum folks showered and I was amazed how many showered twice a day. Might be a good idea now to cut that back to no more than one.

Just saw that this is a national story now (Folsom Lake level). I guess I am a bit perplexed that with such water shortages why are we building on the other side of 50 when we don't have enough water for a population influx (or even the population that is here now?) Is this to get tax revenue even if it is unsustainable?

I'd like to see the Folsom City Council respond to where they propose to get the water for the thousands of homes and businesses they approved. The City Council said they wouldn't approve the development until they found a source of water that wouldn't impact those of in the City. Yes they found a "source" but this source can't make water or bring in any new supplies. It's a legal entity that has rights to water coming out of Folsom Lake. So they'll further divide the inadequate amount available to all water districts including Folsom City.

The irrepairable harm that will come from the South of 50 development in the way of traffic, pollution, and depletion of water is troubling and sad. The reason this major development was approved was for campaign contributions and so City Council can leave a legacy. Unfortunately the legacy they leave us with will not be a positive for the City.  And former Mayor Miklos excitedly talks about this massive development because as a mortgage broker even if he gets a small percentage of the mortgages that will be needed for the thousands of homes he'll reap a significant windfall. He clearly couldn't be objective about approving the development south of 50 and should have recused himself.

On the Facebook page of The Folsom Telegraph is an invitation to join a walking tour on December 28th at 3:00 p.m. of Folsom Lake.  They are meeting at Green Valley Rd. and Sophia Parkway (we park on Sophia and use the crosswalks to be safe.)   It really is a sight to see and sobering to see how little water there is.  It's amazing how much it is going down every day.

We saw a bald eagle today.  There's dredger tailings, old iron bolts, cable.  We made sure we didn't leave with anything except for photographs.  Pretty cool.  I recommend people go out and take a look.

And then people wonder why, as native Northern Californians, we DESPISE Southern California. Yes, screw them to hell. Yes, I am prejudiced against SoCal, and it all goes back to WATER.

Please avoid politifcal tagging with conservation efforts. Just beucase you are one political party or another does not mean you care more about recycling or water conservation.  Water conservation, eco-awareness, enviornmentalism etc. should not be tagged a repub/demo or conservative/liberal affiliation- it affects us all and should be a HUMAN issue.

Regarding the tunnels - I have contacted Gov. Brown, Sac Bee, Ted Gaines, Beth Gaines and Ami Berra about the tunnels.  My letter to the Bee was published.  Only Beth Gaines responded directly to my email stating she was against the tunnels and would fight them.

If you don't want the tunnels I urge you to contact your representatives and join the orgs that are trying to stop them.  Be loud, be vocal - this is poised as being one of the worst enviornmental decisions ever made and we have the power to stop it before it happens.

if those tunnels are allowed to be constructed, things will never be the same here.

Tomatopages is not photo friendly.  If you want to post photos I'd suggest uploading them to photobucket.com at which point you can link to them in your post.  Even if you're not that computer savvy, photobucket makes it pretty easy.

I posted this topic on next door & asked what people were doing. One neighbor mentioned their 10 minute showers. 7 minute showers are long! I have timed 7 minute, ice cold showers, after a heavy weight lifting day at the gym. Not fun, but sometimes necessary (no bathtub at my house). Regarding twice a day showers, I could understand how that might be necessary if one has been doing manual labor or working out! but I really don't want to know the details!
