Although he hasn't held a press conference on it, apparently, Bruce Jenner is in the process of becoming a woman.

I imagine it's pretty much of a shock to many people, particularly those of my generation who remember him as the dashing (literally), greatest athlete in the world, representing the United States and winning the gold medal for the decathlon at the 1976 Olympics.

He's also dated and married some beautiful women, so for these reasons it may be hard to reconcile.

At first I thought it was some sort of hoax or publicity stunt, but if true, although I'm not walking in his pumps, if that's who he is, that's who he has to be.

I just hope people don't make his life miserable for his decision.

What do you think? Worth talking about? Good for the country? Bad? No difference? Is he an anomaly or are there millions of people feeling trapped in the wrong body, or having the wrong body parts? Are any of them famous? Will we see more of this? What message does it send to kids? I hope it's 'be who you are'?

Maybe he saw how much fun( and $$) the Kardashian girls are having for doing nothing but being celebrities and he wanted in on some of that?

I think the media is, like usual, making much ado about nothing. I think Bruce should tell his/her story. While it is a physical big deal, it affects none of us so we shouldn't be judging. Hopefully it will go smoothly for him and for those watching who may feel the same way.

I'm sure he's not the only person who wishes they could transform; he just has the money, the opportunity, and the guts to do so.

He is very brave to do this in the public eye. My heart goes out to him in full support.

I am of the mind that life is too short- you should be true to yourself, not make yourself miserable by trying to fit into society's "acceptable" labels.

As long as who you are/ how you choose to live your life does not harm others ( like marrying a woman who believes you are straight, when you are actually gay, and cheating) then go for it.

Differences like this is what makes our world so interesting and vibrant.

Vive la Difference!

This isn't new news and it doesn't affect me. I have never walked in the shoes of someone who felt trapped in the wrong gender body and I cannot judge.

It's entertaining, but not a big deal to me or the nation.   I just wonder why he waited to become an OLD woman - not much of a point to change gender at age 65.  But whatever floats his boat.  I won't pretend it's "normal", however.

What I find interesting about the topic in general (complete with all the newspeak terms like "cisgendered") is that, by the very act of changing gender, one is PROMOTING the idea that there are attributes that are stereotypically female or male.  Otherwise there would not be the need of a change.  The man who becomes a woman because he doesn't fit in society's view of men ends up instead reaffirming society's view of women.  Why change at all, if the goal is to "be yourself"?  It just doesn't make sense to me.  But the saving grace is that I really don't care what others do, except as a mild and fleeting form of entertainment.

I personally think it is the dumbest thing in the world. Like some other here I think he waited way to long. I mean he has been married, had children with
his wife and all.   Sorry, I just can't understand this. If he felt that way he should have done it long long ago.

A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

Societal pressures, acceptance into the sport of his choice, and many other understandable reasons. This certainly was not as understandable an issue as it is today (not that there is wide understanding or acceptance even today).

I completely agree with this. Society already allows a significant range of gender interpretation (e.g., "tomboy" women, effeminate men etc.) so why can't you just be who you are, without resorting to surgical and chemical mutilation of your body?

I find it bizarre that we are supposed to accept the idea of people getting their penises chopped off and taking drugs to grow breasts... yet if I went to the doctor and said, "I've never really felt at home with my gimpy left leg, please chop it off" I'd be sent right to the psychiatrist. How about encouraging people to accept the body they have, instead of mutilating it?

That said, I think society would be healthier if we embraced a more fluid idea of gender instead of shoving everybody into the pink box and the blue box. There are people who are more near the center of the gender continuum, and that should be fine--without them having to undergo surgery or chemical alteration.

I would certainly never discriminate against, or be mean, to someone who changed their gender. In fact, this summer I worked with a delightful young man who was in the process of doing so. I just think there is a healthier way of addressing this issue.

I just can't wait until I don't hear or see anything about this family of stupid, shallow, uneducated, narcissists on the TV, on the magazine rack, or on the radio.   Maybe they will all get on the same private jet someday and fly to Tahiti or somewhere like that for vacation and the plane will just not show up...? If Kanye is with them all the better....!   Two for one as they say...  The real fun would be to put them all up on a game show like Jeopardy or in a spelling bee so we can all see how really stupid they all are.   The Kardashians 15 minutes were over a long time ago but unfortunately nobody noticed...........     Chris

Bruce Jenner's actions imply that God made a mistake. In my religion, I don't believe God makes mistakes. That is where my opinion stands.

Just to focus on that one point, I find it interesting that "gender" is now said to exist in the mind, as distinct from "sex", which is the body.  I always considered the two as synonyms.  Like Homer wrote, if you have a Y chromosome, you are a male.  That's pretty clearcut.  Either I understood the word "gender" incorrectly, or (more likely) it's been coopted by those who wish to distinguish it from sex - thereby actually perpetuating gender stereotypes, as I previously mentioned.

Those who balk at having to check the "male" or "female" box on a form (the "pink" and "blue" boxes, as it were), do so because they treat those words as gender, when what is being asked is sex.  The only other logical options are "neither" and "both", and those make no sense (except for rare hermaphrodytes).

I'm not sure you are correct, Rich T. My understanding is there are people whose gender (or sex, if you wish) is "eyeballed" when they are born--i.e., do they have a penis or not and based on that they are deemed "boy" or "girl"-- but their internal plumbing and hormones paint a more complex picture. For example, you might look like a boy on the outside but have some female parts inside or high levels of female hormones.

I'm not an expert on this, but that's the impression I have.

That might be part of the explanation for why some people who appear one gender feel so certain they were meant to be the other gender.

The creepy freaky weirdo extremely high maintenance Kardashians did that to him.

I'm surprised he hasn't committed suicide, I know I'd be tempted to end things if I was married to that high maintenance narcissistic witch.
