We are new to EDH and live in Serrano. We're trying to figure out if putting in a snake fence/wire would actually work. Our backyard is against a greenbelt and we have 2 small kids and a dog. We just had a baby rattlesnake in the backyard yesterday and I almost stepped on it.
Does anyone know if it's worth it to get the snake fence installed? Does anyone know anything about the solar pest repeller? I read that some people use these solar repellers around the outside of their homes to get rid of snakes. I'm not sure if it would work on rattlesnakes...
I'd really appreciate any feedback!! Thanks!

I used to live in Serrano simillar to you backing up against greenbelt and had 2 young kids. I did have a snake fence (checken wire mesh) and I killed a mid size one with a shovel; a baby one in the garage; and a baby one inside the home!!! yikes!! our next door neighbor found 2 rattlers by the pool.

Serrano's green belt have snake food all over (rats and other critters). I would discover lil snakes in the front walkways, streets, etc at around 7 pm.

My pest control guy told me that there is a lady in Serrano that orderes snakeaway (which essentially is crushed moth balls) for herself and a few neighbors every year online and she swears by them. I have also heard that snakes hate the smell of mint herb, but be careful because if you plant that stuff , it grows like weeds.

I don't live in Serrano, but I'm in EDH and equally concerned about rattlesnakes. I bumped into an employee of PetSmart who lives in Serrano, next to a greenbelt, and lost a dog to rattlesnake bites (the snake bit the dog twice). She said she had snake fencing and it didn't work. The snake was quite large and the fencing didn't deter it. This individual swore by the snake vaccine as a means of protecting dogs. I know that some vets don't recommend it because the side effects can be brutal and apparently the vaccine was tested on rattlesnakes in the southwest, but hasn't been tested on the kind of snakes we have here. There is a guy (affiliated with the Hangtown Kennel Club) in Placerville who provides rattlesnake awareness classes for dogs. I've heard that most dogs who go through the training won't get within 3 feet of a rattlesnake. Contact is Cathy Keeler 530-622-6909 (after 6:30 pm) next training is 6/27 and 6/28 and it takes 15 minutes.

Sorry, I'm not much help when it comes to kids, but thought I would pass this info on about dogs.

If you find out that the solar repellers work or moth balls (not sure these are safe for animals or children), etc. Please post back to us so that we can all benefit.

Thank you for asking the question!

There are lots of "snake" repellents out there, but there has been no conclusive studies that is backed by solid research. Snakeaway, snakeguard are some of it.

I saw a dog with one leg amputed in the parking lot of petsmart. I asked the owner what happened and she said "rattle snake bite". She lived in EDH.

EDH is critter country according to our pest control guy.

Maybe you could help me....

I've been trying to find a web link for information about what critters are in the Folsom area. I wanted it to include insects as well.

I'd really like to know what we have here.

Any links you could pass on?

Here's a start. I can add to it if there's an interest.

Thanks, John, that's what I needed.

But, I'd like to know about the insects as well. I've heard of there being some pretty ugly and very large insects, here in Folsom.

Thanks for that link. I think I'll send this to my husband because he has a somewhat cavalier attitude about the possibility of being bitten by a rattlesnake here.

It should shake him up a little!

We've been fortunate enough not to run across any in our yard in Serrano, as we back to one greenbelt and face another. We do have "snake fence" along the back, but I can't say for sure that it actually is the reason we haven't had any. Small snakes could quite easily pass right through it, although it would be trickier for a larger snake to get through. I did kill one directly across the street from our house last year - about a 4 footer. Hated to kill it, but it was in an area where lots of people walk. From about this time of year until it cools down in the Fall, it's a good idea to keep an eye out for 'em - particularly in the evenings.

The problem with using kingsnakes as a deterrent is that snakes in general do not eat very often at all. In fact, a meal of one rattler would probably keep a king going for a month or more. Snakes make for very poor pest control. Hawks, on the other hand....

I would say that the chances of a peson being bitten are quite low (not that I'd want to be the person to get bit!). Rattlesnakes tend to make their presence known before striking. Biggest risk would be to inadvertently step on one or stick your hand into a place where one is resting. They tend to sprawl out on warm surfaces in the evening and to escape the hot sun by going under logs, rocks, etc during the heat of the Summer days.

Thank you to everyone for your input! We had the snake fence installed on Thursday so we'll see... I'm also ordering the solar pest repeller. I'll let you know if it works.
Thanks!

I've heard they have been known to lurk and sometimes post on this forum. laugh.gif
