I agree with 4gF -- it will be unfortunate to lose a key establishment of investigative journalism, lacking as it may be.While I disagree with the bias behind many of their articles, they do upon occasion have notable pieces of investigative journalism.

It seems like those supportive of more conservative views would agree that the press is a key element of keeping an eye on our government. Ironically, it seems that most primary media behavior is just the opposite. Rather than expose political movements contrary to the greater good, the media positions these items with favorable bias and/or obfuscation. Unfortunately, I feel the Bee falls in this camp.

If the Bee disappears, then perhaps another will replace it, filling a void with a more professional journalistic acumen. If there is a market, a business will enter if money is to be made. Businesses not meeting market needs should be allowed to fail.

If you give money to The Sacramento Bee, you are basically donating $$ to the Democrat Party.

Just remember that...

Is that transportation fee on top of the cost of the paper, or included in the cost?

My husband and I have had the digital version for a couple of years now.

So you pay for the digital version? Can you explain (since Bee staff couldn't) what you get for that fee that everyone else who goes to the Bee's website for free can't get?

You can only view the bee online for free for so long. After so many click throughs, it remembers your computer and kicks you out, telling you to pay for a subscription. You can view the homepage with no problem, but when you click,on an article it kicks you to the subscription page.
Maybe if you delete your history/ cookies etc, you can view longer before it kicks you out.

That's perhaps one of the reasons the Bee is failing.  You're trying to get something of value for free.  Deleting cookies is just a tiny way to scam the system.  If you want something of value, expect to pay for it.  Then negotiate a price.  It's the essence of the free enterprise system.

The transportation fees are added in as a separate charge.

I notice that it says transportation charges are:

$79.63 for 52 weeks

$39.82 for 26 weeks

$19.91 for 13 weeks.

I will be calling them tomorrow.... My wife has talked to them in the past and she said they just don't seem to care

if you stop your paper or not.

My computer is set to not keep history; maybe that's why I've never had an issue with this.

This is amazing.  People post their gripes and grumbles about why the cost of the newspaper keeps going up.  Then some talk about how to adjust computer settings so they are getting something of value for free from the same newspaper.  In some circles, that's called theft.  How is a company supposed to provide top-notch service at rock bottom prices while people are stealing from them on a regular basis?  It's an economic system that doesn't work.  People need to actually think about what they're doing.  If the paper goes down the toilet, some of you contributed to its failure.

I would never advocate stealing, but most online news sources are 100% free. Google, yahoo, sfgate and countless others provide great information without charging the viewer.

If a site wants me to subscribe in order to view content, instead of finding a way to trick them, I go to one of the free sites.

I never said I did this, I don't actually read the Bee any longer. Once they started charging for what is free many other places, I moved on to other sources. And honestly, they make money through ads, especially online. You can't go to their webpage without 8 pop ups getting in the way, it's frustrating to navigate.but good for you to call people out for "stealing" the news. Silly.

Jump to conclusions much?  I don't adjust my computer settings to get things for free; as Steve pointed out most news sites are free and I assumed The Bee's was as well. I adjust my computer settings for privacy purposes. We were subscribers to The Bee for 24 years and dropped that subscription for several reasons, including poor investigative journalism, dramatically rising prices, and adding the fee for digital service we didn't ask for and hadn't been using.

Fired them years ago.  If I want progressive propaganda I just watch MSNBC, CNN, ABC, or buy the NY Times on occasion.   The Wall Street Journal is the best paper to pick up for unbiased news and opinion, in my opinion.  I don't even go to the Sac Bee site anymore because it is such a pain and they cut you off after a few articles wanting you to sign up.  Not for me.   No way.   Chris

Folks...Steve said it.  If you don't like the Bee, go elsewhere.  I'm just pointing out that in the USA, most news organizations are for-profit businesses.  They need to generate revenue any way they can.  There may be other sources of the news that are currently free, but they are working on ever more creative ways to monetize their products.  It may take a few years, but they will be charging you for the news at some point. Most news organizations have Harvard MBA's working on ways to separate you from your money.  Remember 25 years ago when network television shows were free?  The industry has slowly developed ways to charge customers for content and today just about everyone pays something for even the most basic TV shows.  Same is gonna happen with news content.

The industry has slowly developed ways to charge customers for content ...

...while simultaneously lowering the quality and volume of the news they report. It's sad.

Unfortunately, one of the features of a for-profit news source is they put out what they think will get people to watch or read.  It's all about ratings and profit.  Can't blame them. It's one of the benefits of free enterprise.  there are some unbiased news sources available however, but most are not for-profit operations.  Examples are BBC, NPR, Vice (on HBO).
