Hey Folks

It's been a little over a year since I took over myfolsom. Some of what I've learned:

  • It's not easy coming up with new stories or angles on old topics
  • I'm not a technical whiz
  • Most web design folks are terrible at follow through
  • Lots of people read but don't post
  • I'm having fun!

So, I've watched, learned and listened, and I still have far to go, but I'm ready to make some changes to the look and feel to make it easier to navigate, have more info for visitors and residents alike, such as school info, things to do, events, etc.

I'd like to know what you want out of myfolsom. I asked just over a year ago, and here were some of the responses:

  • There are way too many subforums. Make it simple
  • Bring back the annual "Best of Folsom
  • Maybe a pinned topic where people can post upcoming Folsom events that may not be heavily promoted?
  • Can you make it any easier to post photos?
  • My biggest draw to the site is local news and information - who are the good contractors and what local shops go above and beyond the call of duty?
  • Have some living threads, perhaps FAQ like. Many of the same topics come up again and again; let's capture that tribal knowledge as people come and go.
  • Please continue your real estate updates. I like those very much Even more in depth stuff, maybe articles on "flippers", commercial real estate, local builder updates, trends in loans, etc
  • City management, schools, venues, Elks/Lions/Kiwanis/VFW or other large public organizations in town are pushing out news, publish it and start discussion on it.  Upcoming events, major construction.  I know it's a lot of work to put such lists together, and someone else probably already is, see if you can partner and share.
  • Mking the site easier to navigate would be helpful. For instance, if I hit the red Tomato Pages button up top, it takes me to ALL the forums (MySacramento, MyRoseville, etc). I am only interested in MyFolsom.
  • I still like the idea of getting high school and college kids who want to major in journalism to help develop content for the site, not for money, but for the experience.  Articles on events and attractions in the area would be interesting and useful.

I will implement as much of the above as I can. Anything else?

I think perhaps have a photo gallery where readers could post photos would be cool. Maybe even find a sponsor and have people vote on the best photo of the month/week.

Thanks for all you do for Folsom, Steve. It's much appreciated.

Steve, many times I have wanted to forward an item to someone else but as far as I know there is no way

to forward an item here via email to someone else that is not on this net.

I know that I can copy and paste an item from here into an email and send it that way, but is there a way

to just click on an item, or entry, and send it via email to someone not on the net?

Camay, in the lower left there is a little envelope, you can use that to email a link.

A photo stream would definitely be cool.

Steve -- Thanks for all of your work on this site. I would like to second the request to bring back the Best of Folsom awards. Also, did you archive the old Visitor Resources and Resident Resources (or whatever those categories were called) that used to be linked near the top of the main page? I liked those as well for things like restaurant reviews. Just curious.

Hello jello, I will be bringing back the Best of Folsom this spring. Yes, I did archive some pages as they had some outdated info, but I will be restoring some and making them more relevant to Folsom today.

Thanks for the comments.

Steve, have you thought about revamping the myfolsom facebook page? It seems like the Folsom Watch (& other Folsom based) pages are super active, and they are groups. Maybe if myfolsom was set up as an informative group with access to the forum. Maybe the FB posts could be somehow merged with the forum topics.

I would like to suggest nixle reports dropped onto myfolsom automatically -like a ticker. Just for emergency stuff. Usually come here to get info on local events instead of folsom telegraph or a terribly slow and clumsy PD news website.

on a sideline note- I think it would be nice to see some special community groups have announcements here-who have previously been rather quiet. examples: VFW, Museum History, Arts commission, Parks, small business owner clubs etc.

It would be great to see occasional news tickers about some of these great resources in Town.

I would like to better-connect with the Facebook crowd. The myfolsom Facebook page has about 2500 'likes' and some of my posts there get hundreds of hits and shares, but it's not where I want it to be.

I am working on strengthening that channel.

Nixle doesn't send out things as often as I like, but usually, either myself or Cal will post it.

The new version of the site will have a community calendar and announcement page.

If you could add this feature to the site featuring local foothill wines that'd be great, thanks!

Maybe as a newbie I am just missing it, but I don't see a way to search the forums. I'd like that functionality if it doesn't already exist.
