I think we are about to discontinue getting the Sacramento Bee.

Check this out. We get the paper every day.

Bills:

July 2014  - $137.80

Jan 2015  - $194.60

Jul 2015  - $254.40

This time they want #312.00

This is for 6 months

I notice that it says transportation charges are:

$79.63 for 52 weeks

$39.82 for 26 weeks

$19.91 for 13 weeks.

So now we are paying for their fuel. This is just our family. If they are getting that from every paper they deliver???

Anyone else getting the same type of bill?

We cancelled our subscription several months ago because of escalating prices and the automatic addition of a fee for online service we neither asked for nor approved (after arguing with a supervisor, we were refunded the several months they had been adding that fee). And NO ONE I spoke with (three reps, one of whom was a supervisor) could tell me what the online fee got me that going to their website on my own (without paying the fee)  couldn't.

I remember a radio interview with the new editor about 10 years ago.

She said that she believed that eventually, consumers would pay for online subscriptions, and that having a printed copy delivered would become a luxury rather than a standard.

If you cancel The Bee, I applaud you. I fired them in recent years, as did MANY people I know. I'm glad I did. You may miss it at first, but after a week or so you'll be glad you fired them.

Not only were the prices escalating quickly, but their righteous, holier-than-thou political leanings and views are highly partisan and nauseating. I won't elaborate on that, as I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about.

I believe that's the way a lot of newspapers will go, however --- it still doesn't make sense to charge customers a fee to use the newspaper online while it is still available online free. If there is some hidden benefit for paying for the online service, their customer service people don't know what it is. :o

Cancelled the Bee this year and went back to the Chronicle. Also get the NY Times on Sun. The Bee seems like it's written by grade school kids these days.

$312.00. Now
Wait until you have to renew. They will get you then.

Exactly.

This short article I am posting is 6 years old...I can only imagine what has happened since then...and thus the ridiculous price hikes...

My mom just canceled her subscription last week. It used to be that when you put a vacation stop on your paper you were asked if you wanted them to hold your papers, donate them to a school, or extend your subscription renewal date. She stopped the paper when she was on vacation for about three weeks but they wouldn't extend her renewal date.

My husband and I have had the digital version for a couple of years now.

I am still paying $3.80 per week, but you have to work like heck to get them to get it down to this level( BUT THEY WILL) .  This makes it $98 for six months but it is actually less as they charge an extra $1 per paper for holidays - INCLUDING COLUMBUS DAY !

Not much in the paper anymore and even the Sunday paper is finished in less than 30 minutes.

The Coupons and %off Savings are the only reason I get the paper really...  I saved $420 dollars in the last 6 months in Clothes, Food and other things from in paper coupons as well as  coupon  inserts.  Plus I like getting the food ads on Wednesday...

Once my ROI drops, so will the paper...

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

I found several years ago that the Bee was too expensive with too little content of interest. And it was too biased -- I want to read the news and form my own opinions based on facts. I hate it when the Bee tells me how I should think and just provides facts that support their opinion.

They have an occasional expose or good investigative journalism pieces. But their biased reporting for most articles was intellectually insulting and unprofessional. I wouldn't read the Bee even if it were free.

I am going to call them next week and will see if they will lower it. I have been with them since

we moved here in 2000.

I can't see paying the transportation charges and I really wonder if the carrier gets that money

or just a small portion of it.

Most printed newspapers (and news magazines too) are in the survival mode.  they have become victims of disruptive technology.  For whatever reasons, they forgot to evolve and adapt to the new capabilities available for delivering services to people.  Think of the victims of disruptive technology - Kodak camera, FAX machines, vinyl records, gas station attendant, cassette tape players, CD players, hardcover encyclopedias, etc, etc.  The list is endless.  Things being disrupted right now - landline telephone, oil & gas industry, computer disk drives, the US Post Office, cars with drivers, taxi companies, vacation rental industry, and PRINTED NEWSPAPERS.  Most newspapers have moved on line and generate income from the ads and click-thrus.  Printed papers may survive but in very low volume and truly as a luxury.   As Darwin said, "Adapt or perish".

$19 for 13 weeks? That's only 20 cents a day to have someone drive it to your house and leave it in your driveway every morning, rain or shine. Because it is "news" they can't print it and still get it to you the next morning any other way.

Yes, the paper is expensive and smaller compared to previous decades, but if we lose a local paper the size of the Bee, we are going to lose any investigative journalism we can every hope for. Who then is going to keep an eye on our politicians and government? The press is the fifth estate, right? Television news is car crashes, fires and bright shiny objects, trying to provide for the majority viewer, so it's not striving to really dig in and find out what's going on behind the scene. Also the Bee provides a letters to the editor section that gives us the opportunity to be heard by the full community we live, not a fractured group of members of a certain forum or Facebook group. The calendars, Ticket and Connect sections also really help get the word out about community events for nonprofit and other organizations.

I was shocked by the price when I started subscribing two years ago (I finally felt I had enough time to read it), but I did it to support the Bee. I will continue to, even though I don't always have the time to read it. its less than a cup of coffee a day and you can wash your windows and pack things with the paper.
Knowing the past helps deciphering the future.
