My daughters are in their 20's now, and though I support everyone's right to be who they are, I'm not sure presenting transgender issues to kindergartners is appropriate. Am I wrong?

From FOX40: "ROCKLIN -- How young is too young to introduce a child to the concept of gender identity? That is a question the Rocklin Academy Schools district tried to handle after a young student revealed herself as transgender.

Some parents applauded the district's efforts while others questioned whether it was handled properly.

Ankur Dhawan's 5-year-old daughter was in the classroom that day. She came home and talked about what she learned.

"She said, 'Well, we learned about a girl in a boy's body,'" Dhawan said. "This turned out to be a fairly decent way of introducing a topic that I wouldn't otherwise know to do."

The lesson came after a 5-year-old classmate, whose sex assigned at birth was male, was reintroduced to the class as a girl. Two books were read inside the classroom, both written specifically for young children, to illustrate what it means to be transgender.

"All I heard was my son just mentioned his friend who was a boy is now a girl," parent Chris Hurley said.

While some parents understand why their kids were given the lesson, others who spoke with FOX40 off camera took issue.

"They're concerned that they weren't notified this was coming," Greg Burt, director of capitol engagement with the California Family Council, told FOX40.

School officials say the teacher read the books in class without prior approval from administrators. Parents weren't notified until a week later, when a letter was sent out."

I think it is preposterous that a child of FIVE can determine which gender they "identify" as. This is FAR more a reflection of the parents. Good grief.

More liberal lunacy in their quest for everything equal and the same and the added enjoyment of destroying religion, decency, and the traditional family structure......!   Just like I can't find the men's room anymore at restaurants.....?   Only woman's bathrooms or men/woman bathrooms....?   Where did the men's room go...?   Chris

This story raised a lot of questions for me.

First of all, the school year just began.  I checked this school district's calendar, and school began on August 16.  So why did the child need to be "re-presented" as a girl?  Why didn't the kid just show up as a girl the first day of school?

Second, kindergartners are just going to accept what they see.  If they see a kid with longish hair and pink clothes, they're going to assume the kid is a girl and has always been a girl.  So, why does such a big deal need to be made? -- I fear the answer is that someone has an agenda and wants to put this in everyone's faces.

I just feel the whole thing was unnecessary and likely to sow confusion and possibly worry among little kids.  I also think by making a big "presentation" of it, they singled this kid out and marked him/her as odd--which is not usually what you want a child to experience psychologically in kindergarten.

And by the way, I am hardly someone who promotes traditional gender stereotypes.  I believe society would be a lot healthier if we stopped all the girl/boy nonsense and just acknowledged a gender continuum, with people being more feminine, more masculine, or in between, as desired.  Nonetheless, I find this kindergarten "presentation" absurd.

That's all you had to say... and I agree with you.

schools need to teach children to read, do math, learn history and how our government works.  a social agenda is inappropriate and belongs in the home.  This is nuts.

Yes, I stand corrected, Prager is great, Prager University too...   Listen to him almost every day.   Yes, the "liberals" are really not liberal.  They want to control how much money you make, where you live, what you say, what you drive and how far, categorize and judge you by your skin color alone, regulate your carbon, control your news, tell you whether you can have a fire in your fireplace and on what day, and they even set up reporting systems for other citizens to "inform" on you for what you say politically, if you have a fire on a no burn day, or if your car emits too much smoke...   No, not "liberals"...   Liberals would leave you alone and let you live your life as you see fit.   Libertarians are actually the true liberals today if you ask me.   Chris

I heard about this and thought it very odd that a child that young would even care about their sexual identity.  When my son was that age he'd play with any kids that wanted to play. He wasn't really interested with what he wore and would have dashed outside to play in pink pants, if they were the only ones that were clean.  It didn't mean anything to him what he wore.

As far a the bathroom laws, I don't know if that is still a law that bathrooms must be sexually neutral. I was at Green Acres last weekend and had to use the restroom. They have two restrooms that are termed family but each has a urinal and a stool.  I thought that the size of them would have easily accommodated more customers had the traditional men and women's method been used. Now, there is only one person who can use the restroom at a time because there are no stalls.  However, I am happy that my child and I will be safer because of the changes. Nobody can enter the restroom after me that maybe up to no good.
