Indeed. It's more than about the wine, but about the experiences.

As I said, for Deaver, it's about their dessert wines and the pond.

I'm not too much of a Toogood fan.

Windwalker has good wine, but I've never been to a tasting room where the people were less engaging, interested or interesting. Talking about the wine, or just plain conversation was lost on them.

Was Lava Cap sold?

Lava Cap is a famy winery and the wine maker and his wife sold their shares a bit ago. They wanted to get back into wine at a place where they could be more hands on.

Huh. Windwalker was a very chatty stop for us when we went there for the first time a few months ago.

I'm planning a limo/party-bus trip through wine country for a birthday party and was wondering if the fine folks of MyFolsom have any suggestions.  Any good or bad experiences with local limo companies?  Should I go El Dorado or Amador wine country?  I've been told that Amador is better for hitting multiple wineries since they are closer together and has less traffic (this will be early October, so Apple Hill will be in effect).

Check out the short bus, lots of fun! http://www.shortbusrides.com/

Just wanted to give an update on this topic and a shout out to Wayne, the owner and tour guide at Sierra Wine Experience.  I stumbled across his site while researching my trip and thought it was exactly what I needed!  I just gave him some general ideas of what I wanted for the day and he did all the work to make it happen.

Wayne is a local Folsomite that knows a lot about wineries in the area and personally knows many of the owners and winemakers.  Rather than a day in a limo with a driver that doesn't know much about wine, he works with wineries to provide a wonderful wine tour for customers and to help promote the local wineries.  For example, he does not allow drinking on the bus to eliminate one of the main things wineries hate about limo groups.

Because of things like that, many of the wineries work with him.  A couple wineries setup a special tasting area away from the main tasting room for our group. The wine maker gave us a private tasting, along with some great education and insight into wine for those that wanted to hear it.  Most also waived the tasting fee and limits for us (many wineries allow you to pick 5 or 6 wines to taste, while we got to taste the entire selection).  We even tried a couple wines that weren't on the normal tasting menu.  Some wineries also gave our group discounts normally reserved for club members or bulk purchases.

Wayne also put together a picnic at one of the wineries (Holly's Hill) that we all thought was amazing and way better than I would have done myself, which I was glad to not have to do!  He even surprised us with a cake for my wife's birthday, which was totally unexpected.

Overall, it was a perfect day.  My wife and guests all said it was way better than they ever expected.  We plan to do this more often and explore more wineries in the area.

Thanks for the information. That sounds really nice!  Holly's Hill is one of my favorite wineries and also one of my favorite picnic spots.

That sounds awesome!

Holly's Hill is one of our favorites as well.

Awesome people, great views, and some of my favorite wines.

Where else did you go?

We wanted less driving time so we had more time at the wineries, so we decided to stay nearby this time.

I just discovered Cielo this summer.  Decent wine (the Syrah is my favorite) and great Friday night concerts.  Much closer to Folsom than some of the other wineries who offer music.

Cielo had a couple good wines, but I personally think the wines were much better when it was the Davis owned Sogno (pre-2007).  The new owners have only been at it a couple years and they replaced a lot of the vines with different varietals.  So I don't know if it is just everything being new or this is the style of the new winemaker.  We'll see if it changes in the coming years.

I opened a Procissi Cellars 2003 Barbera the other day.  Wow.  that really laid down well!  Sorry they closed.

Wayne Procissi was a great guy. I miss him. One of his old friends, Mike Conti, just opened 'It's Personal' in the old Cloud's a few doors up. Nice, friendly guy. Pretty darn good wine, too.

I think Conti was an acquantance, not a friend.  At least that is what Barbara said.
