As many of you know there is a trail down from the parking lot by rodeo park that leads into Old Folsom. My friend and i have been walking that trail for a couple of years. When we were coming back up the trail there was a guy off under the trees eating from a bowl.

We didn't think too much about it and i was coughing coming back up the hill and he started to mimic my cough. We kept walking but he came down behind us and said "you guys have something to say to me"? Then he threw his bowl at us and it splattered everywhere, including hitting the top of my foot.

Luckily it did not break the skin. I did dial 911 immediately and described the guy: probably in early 30's, beard, black backpack and orange bike. Dispatcher said she would notify the police and she went on to say there had been trouble lately with transients in the area.

I wish the police would put alerts as to where the trouble has been so we would avoid those areas. I have always felt safe walking around here but will definitely be carrying pepper spray from now on.

Wow, Pat. I'm glad you're ok. I am told that there is a group of homeless people living along the trail back where you were. Someone mentioned on Folsom Watch that she brings them care packages and they are nice people, but more often than not, people who live in such circumstances seem to have mental health issues.

Be safe

PS. I hope you don't mind that I edited it a bit to correct some typos.

this is why authorities suggest you don't feed the homeless.  I always go through the proper agencies. their ultimate aim is to get them out of that lifestyle.

On Friday, I was walking with a friend and we intentionally did not take that trail because I had been warned that someone else (a husband and wife) had been accosted down there, a man and woman walking together.  there was no way I was taking a friend down there with me and it is (or used to be) one of our favorite trails.  that's simply not right.

Thank you both for sharing. I won't be going that way anymore.

4th-- Feeding the majority of the homeless is an act that is welcomed graciously by them.   While there are some in the homeless community that have recently arrived and some that are clearly mental , the majority are peaceful...      It is a shame that a few mess it all up...  and make some of our trails and locations a bit off limits. These are the ones that the FPD and programs should be focusing on to get them into programs... Unfortunately they do not and there is NO ULTIMATE AIM ( let alone a PLAN ) to get them out of that lifestyle- except on a minimalist scope...   Folsom's homeless population is increasing and not in a good way as the fringe and the mentally ill move up the light rail line and not much is done about it...    Has the city council set any plans to resolve this that you know of  ?

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

From Fox 40 News today

FOLSOM -- Police in Folsom say the city's homeless population has grown in the last few years.

According to Corporal Peter Boelman, who heads the Community Crime Suppression Unit, the city's homeless population is officially at 30, but transients come in and out.

He said much of the migration into Folsom has been out of Sacramento. Boelman adds some who are homeless say they've come to Folsom in search of housing assistance and resources -- something they think is dwindling in Sacramento.

Boelman also suggested the extension of the Regional Transit Gold Line has contributed to the homeless population increase. Folsom is the end of the line for RT's light rail.

Meanwhile, RT denies giving homeless people vouchers, discounts or incentives to ride the train.

Folsom police say their officers have cleared out more than 100 camps along the river and secluded trails in 2017.
