The Bee reports that there are plans for a lingerie shop to open on Sutter Street. Apparently the front of the shop will have corsets, lingerie, and the like. The back of the shop will have "adult novelty" items (this is the term the paper used).

A number of Sutter Street merchants are upset because they feel this will detract from the family atmosphere of Sutter Street.

What do you think?

Personally I am having trouble understanding exactly what kind of shop this will be. After all, there is a Victoria's Secret in every mall -- no one seems to complain about that. Evidently this is more racy than V.S... I'm also not sure if kids will be banned from the back of the shop, or what. I think the most important thing is that the shop windows and advertising be discreet and tasteful -- i.e., no signs advertising their "novelty items."

That reflects one of the problems with Sutter Street. Many of the merchants seem to resist change. At the same time, they complain that business is down. Perhaps it will breathe some new life into that nearly dead area.

In the space of 100 yards or so, I can think of 6 bars on Sutter. Is that the 'family' atmosphere they are trying to protect?

Unless they're putting 'toys' in the display window, I see nothing wrong with a lingerie shop on Sutter.

Keep it OUT of old Folsom.

There is a difference between bars and the adult novelty/lingerie shops. Bars don't display racy stuffs outside their shops. Adult/lingerie shops do. Bars are not associated with "sex", adult/lingerie do.

If we allowed these types of shops in, then what will be next.

Bars are more closely associated with drunken behavior, including fighting, which happens frequently on Sutter. They are also dispensers of the most widely used date-rape drug, alcohol. I don't advocate shutting them down, but to me, they pose more of a threat to family values than do underwear shops.

Jack Nicholson questioned our morals once, when he talked about the movie rating system, "Kiss a tit, rated R. Hack it off, PG13"

I don't want Sutter to turn into Bourbon Street, but a tasteful lingerie shop should not threaten our values. Women gotta get they're drawers somewhere! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

It's a hard choice whether or not to say yes or no to this because of the lack of information we currently have...but personally I would be against putting a "lingere shop/ adult novelty" store on sutter street.

But if it was to go in..then I would agree with bordercollie that they keep the shop windows advertising respectful and tastefull. hypocritesmiley.png

And im not so sure that putting in a store like that is going to exactly breathe new life into Old town. Putting it in Old Town just seems really odd in my eyes. I know I wouldnt go to Old town and shop just because of that type of store...

I think FolsomBlondie and cybertrano said it best....

We visited Portland recently. Walking around downtown, we came across a lingerie store that had lots of imported French (expensive!) lingerie that was tastefully displayed and lovely to browse. If this is what went in on Sutter Street, I'd be for it. However, the fact that there will be a back section with "novelty items" indicates to me it'll be trashy, and thus unwelcome there. Do Nevada City or Mill Valley have stores like that? Not likely. I don't understand why we can't attract the right kinds of shops there?! sad.gif

The most powerful vote we have is with our money. If you don't like a lingerie store on Sutter Street, don't spend your money there. If a sufficient number of people agree with you, they will not be able to stay in business.

I don't know about this bishbaby.

Can you say something like this:

"If you don't like an adult store on Sutter Street, don't spend your money there. If a sufficient number of people agree with you, they will not be able to stay in business. "

Absolutely I can say that.

Additionally, if a full blown adult store (no pun intended) opened on Sutter Street, I would visit the neighboring businesses and tell them that my family and I would no longer patronize their businesses with a store like that nearby. I can reasonable expect that they would put pressure on the landlord.

If enough people agreed with me, the store would leave. It's that simple. Money talks.
