I'm going to be downtown this Saturday and I always have a hard time finding a casual, not too expensive place that's open for lunch. Any suggestions for a good burger/sandwich place? Is there a real NY deli in Sacramento?

I was gonna suggest La Bonne Soupe but I guess that's out now. (which is actually really too bad).

I dunno about downtown. But I've heard good things about Dad's Deli and Roxie Deli. I like Sam's Deli -- any sandwich with pastrami and/or corned beef. For me, they bring back memories of my favorite NYC deli's (in taste but not necessarily in size of sandwich). http://www.yelp.com/...-deli-fair-oaks

Post something if you find someplace good -- I might need one on Sunday. smile.gif

We had Benjamin's in Milwaukee - great corned beef and borscht - haven't found anything comparable here. Thanks, I'll have to try the Sam's Deli in Fair Oaks. I've been in Sacramento for lunch on Saturdays before and most of the little hole in the wall restaurants that look interesting are closed. I'll let you know what I find.

www.towerbridgebistro.com and The MarketPlace Cafe

Right across from Old Sac, both have been written up to glowing reviews in the Bee.

Crepeville is in midtown which is good!

I live in midtown and I would also suggest Crepeville. It's not a deli but the food is amazing and not too expensive, for dessert I would recommend the chocoroll crepe (chocolate crepe, fresh strawberries, bananas, and nutella, drizzled with milk and white chocolate)... so good and such a deal!

Not a lot of Deli's open on the weekend, there is Butch and Nellies on H street, but they are more of a cafe than a true deli.

Good Luck!

Thanks again!!!

I probably shouldn't say this. Ah, why not, it's my own opinion.

I'd respectfully disagree with Crepeville. I've been several times and I've never been impressed. I think the concept is nice and the name is catchy. But the food has never meet expectations. I think the crepes are rather bland and lifeless. The dinner crepes are not very tasty. The fruits for dessert crepes are perhaps fresh but not very good -- not sweet, not fruity and just there for texture and color.

It's not a place I'd recommend. I'd rather have pancakes at Denny's (and I haven't been to Denny's in 18+ years). But everyone has different tastes.

Sorry that this won't work for your weekend visit, since it looks like it's open only M-F...(you might want to call to verify this). But if you can make it another time during the week, this is my best suggestion: Bud's Buffet...which serves mostly sandwiches. It's not actually self-served as the name suggests, you take your order in line before checking out.

This is totally a "guy's" sandwich shop due to the proportions and the lunchtime M/F ratio...Check ou the pics in the link...that's actually just a side of mashed potatoes...!

If you're looking for Mexican, Tres Hermanas on K street is AMAZING and one of my favorite places to eat in all of midtown.
