I got a little sticker shock when I opened our car insurance bill. Maybe some of you can give me a reality check?

We are:

Husband and wife
Age 49 and 50
Each about 15,000 miles per year
No at-fault accidents in last 15 years (just one fender-bender prior to that)
2013 Ford SUV and 2010 BMW

The annual quote is $1750.

Does that seem high?

Thanks for any input!

That sounds like reality to me.  Did something change between last year and this year, in terms of your vehicles or the coverage selected?  Did some discount drop off suddenly.

I've found that if you phone up your insurer and have them walk through each possible discount, they usually find something to drop the price.

You could also reevaluate your deductibles.

You don't have any children still on the policy, I presume?

Well, I just called for a quote from AAA, and they quoted $2,200. So I guess I need to bring my expectations up to date!

The policy crept up about $80 from last year to this year.

Kids are 14 and 16, not driving yet.

That's not to far off for what I pay:

Married couple (won't tell age but younger than you)

$300K coverage

2 sedans, 1 brand new 2014, the other 2003.

Clean driving records

<20k mileage annually between the 2 cars.

Since I have homeowners and Umbrella policies from the same provider, it does knock down my costs a bit.

THAT is what people overlook the most. Makes a huge difference.

What Really makes a HUGE difference is stating your mileage, especially if one or more vehicles is well below the standard 15,000 per year.   It can save hundreds per year depending how low your planned and actual mileage is.

The 16 year old is DEFINITELY impacting your policy.  Not driving does not matter.

Ask the insurer, they will tell you.

Thanks for all the info, everyone. That was a good reality check.

I must say, the auto insurance bill has not been a joyful experience. In addition to the sticker shock, I was dismayed when I called the company and was told that I am now old enough that I could get a policy discount if I take the "Mature Driver Course." :-(
