A true musical genius....!   Never was my kind of music but I recognized his brilliance, his art, his style, his master of the guitar and all the other instruments.   His fans truly loved him as he loved them back.   He did it his way.   Another great one gone too soon.   Chris

Prince and I were the same age.

I always admired him, not because he was freaky, but because he was talented and brave. He wasn't afraid to be controversial, and he wasn't just a flamboyant personality. He was a great musician and song writer. He had style and substance.

He played all of the instruments on many of his songs, including his first big one, 'I wanna be your lover', which he also wrote and produced at the age of 19. He had his own style, while emulating the greats that came before him, notably, Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. Prince created or launched to new heights, the careers of Appolonia, Vanity, Sheila E, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and Morris Day & the Time.

Did you know that on their first album, there really wasn't a 'Time' backing Morris Day? It was Morris Day on lead vocals, and Prince on all instruments and back up vocals. He wrote songs that went to number one for other artists, such as Sinead O'Connor, Cindy Lauper and The Bangles. He had the best musicians in his touring bands, including saxophonists Maceo Parker and Candy Dulfer, and bassist Larry Graham.

I still have probably 7 or 8 of his LPs from the early 80's, when we used to dance at the disco to songs like 'Controversy', and '1999'. I knew my sisterAndrea had been a fan since she was a kid, so I took her to see him in San Jose some years back. We had lousy seats, but my friends David Molinariand Lynn Molinari were able to get us into the fan club section, just a few rows from the stage. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

At one point he did a solo acoustic set, during which he sang a blues tune, one by Elvis, then had the audience join in to help him sing 'Cream' and 'Little Red Corvette'. He then brought out his bassist and drummer for a rock set which included a great, powerful version of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. The rest of the band joined in, and continued playing hit after hit. One thing I noticed was that since he'd become a father, the show was clean, and the girls' outfits weren't skimpy like they used to be. I'll never forget him closing out with Purple Rain. So sorry to see him go so young. (am I considered young?).

Tonight I'll drink something purple in his honor, play some of his music, and party like it's 1999....just a little.

Best Superbowl half time ever.

And this was equally amazing. The guy really was one of a kind.

And he loved pancakes too!

Long-time lurker and rare post-er...saw the thread and had to pipe in with my random tangent.

About 25+ years ago, back in a prior life when I still had dreams of being a rock star, Prince's former guitar player produced my crappy band's demo. I lived in the Midwest, a couple hours from Minneapolis. We had a friend of a friend who had some connections, and convinced Dez Dickerson (from Revolution and all the Purple Rain stuff) to spend a few days recording and mixing our little songs. I have vivid memories of eating burritos at Taco Bell with him between sessions and Dez spending the night at my parent's house. Quite a thrill for a 19 year old kid with big dreams, living in a small town.

Great story! You know, it's not too late to be that rock star.

Haha, oh yeah, I should start a new band...the Past-Their-Primes. We'll be huge!

Too bad Prince will be partly remembered as a drug addict. Just like Michael Jackson. Just like Whitney Houston. Pretty sad. All 3 of them immensely talented...they died way too soon.
