Maybe we could help create a small Asian festival as a fundraiser for the Chan house. We could work with local restaurants, merchants, martial arts schools, museums, etc. and have demonstrations (Tai Chi in the streets anyone?) and booths that celebrate Asian heritage and have an outdoor exhibit of the artifact collection. Sell raffle tickets, etc. That could be a lot of fun and something different in Folsom!

how about some sort of mobile and store-able shade for live friday nights events?

I suppose they could also be used for shade spots at the rodeo or other city events

I went to the brainstorming session last night and present all of your suggestions.

The group came away with about 100 projects, and the steering committee will review all and come up with a manageable list of project.

Stay tuned...

So I guess it's too late to add other possible spruce-up items?

I noticed at least one of the benches on the sidewalk on Riley St. in front of Kohl's was looking faded.

It would be great to help out the post office with that patch of lawn that never seems to do well that makes up the corner of Riley & Glenn.  Maybe put in an example of water-efficient landscaping.

The chain link fencing along the fields at Theodore Judah is in need of small repairs and maybe some Rustoleum-type paint to cover the rust.

The small planter in front of Snowline Hospice could use some help.  Not necessarily plants, but maybe some better landscape fabric and mulch or rock.  It would be a great opportunity for a local artist to put some interesting small metal sculptures made from recycled items.

something kind a cool & unique done in my home town, was an art group repainted the old fire hydrants along our downtown Main Street. They were all different colors and patterns. Something like that might work in Folsom.

I would LOVE that! I would 100 % volunteer to do that! I heard of a city that had utility boxes painted in space themes and flower themes, etc. Some of the artwork was stunning and all done by local artists. (Each concept was proposed by an artist and approved.)

There is a sneak peak at the project list on the city's newsletter.  All great ideas on there.

There is a sneak peak at the project list on the city's newsletter.  All great ideas on there.

And here it is!

Getting ready for 1st city-wide Community Service Day

Steering committee members invited service organizations and other individuals to
brainstorm potential projects that would benefit from volunteer work. The original list of
more than 100 potential projects has been whittled to about 20 projects such as the
following:

 repainting/staining a park-site kids play structure
 creating a community garden
 painting trail rules on trail pavement
 beautifying city entrances by spreading wildflower seeds
 landscaping and fencing at Powerhouse Ministries
 historic cemetery clean-up
 Pioneer Village improvements
 musical instrument/bike donations for children in need
 yard work/leaves clean-up for seniors
 repainting interior of Folsom Teen Centers at middle schools
 painting Zoo Sanctuary and Aquatic Center fencing
 preparing care packages for military troops serving overseas
 open space clean-up

Organizers are recruiting service groups to take leadership of individual projects,
as well as financial sponsors to provide required supplies and materials. If you
would like to play a leadership role or be a financial sponsor, please email
sryan@folsom.ca.us or contact any of the following Steering Committee
members:
 Chair Sue Ryan, City of Folsom
 Steve Miklos, Folsom City Council
 Nancy Atchley, Powerhouse Ministries
 Anna Ballard, Intel
 Jim Bonovich, Folsom Cordova Unified School District  Don Chaddock, Folsom Telegraph
 Brad Franklin, Lakeside Church
 Joe Gagliardi, Folsom Chamber of Commerce
 Dan Haverty, Rotary Club of Folsom Lake
 Timothy Polasik, Folsom State Prison
 Eric King, LDS Church
 Justin Raithel, Folsom Leading Young Professionals
 Anthony Retodo, MD, Kaiser Medical Services
 Michael Ricks, Mercy Hospital
 Tammy Thompson, Twin Lakes Food Bank

Is this a one day event? If so what is the date?  If it was put out I guess I didn't see it.

Thanks.

A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

I believe it said October 25th in the city newsletter, which is a Saturday.

The city newsletter has this link for Community Service Day.  They have a project list now.  It says online signups start early September.

Hmmmm, The weekend before the City Council election and Steve Miklos is the City's representative. Isnt he up for reelection? Pretty easy to see through this!

If this was a spring event or the Council representative wasn't up for reelection, Id consider participating.

I love this idea and am having trouble choosing which project I'd like to help with.  I don't care who is on the steering committee,  and it certainly won't swing my vote.

I do wish they had Sutter Middle landscaping on that list. I'd love to get a crew in there to remove all the 70s bushes and modernize the look some. The teachers are great, but that school is run down.
