Being an exterior staircase, I wonder if it was water damage kind of like that balcony collapse in Berkeley.  It certainly wasn't that old a complex.

So sad for that young man.

From the images on the news tonight it looks like wood rot. For such a young structure, I would guess they didn't treat the wood properly.

Yes, it looks like moisture got in there.

I saw the story on the news last night. That stairway was 'high on the list' of stairways in the complex that were known to be dangerous and were to be replaced by management.

A resident pointed out that one of the stairways had been 'temporarily' braced with lumber over a year ago.

I'm sure they're going to kick the stair replacement into high gear now.

It is tragic that a young had to lose his life in order for them to take the action they knew they had to.

Isn't that the way it is all too often? Someone has to die or be seriously injured for the right thing to be done.

I think we tend to have a lot of faith in construction. "It may be rickety but it's not like it's going to collapse!" Recent events have shown us that sometimes, it does collapse.

A very sad and shocking event.

One staircase had already collapsed last year and they were "in the process" of repairing all. It's not like they didn't know it could happen again.

yeah, that is what makes this all the worse.  it was preventable and almost anticipated.  :(

The article I saw said the apartment had been trying to get the necessary permits to repair the stairs.

Cause of death:  corner cutting (shoddy materials) plus bureaucracy (failure to respond quickly to address a known safety issue).

What a way to go.

There will be a lawsuit and there should be.

At a minimum they could have put temp braces under the stairs until they got them fixed/replaced.

A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-
