All is forgiven, except for the naive part. It is my belief that whether or not you use a dieresis or umlaut when writing 'naive', while the pronunciation changes, the meaning does not. Besides, do I have a deiresis on my keyboard?

From dictionary.com:

na·ive or na·ïve ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-v, nä-) also na·if or na·ïf (n-f, nä)
adj.
Lacking worldly experience and understanding, especially:
Simple and guileless; artless: a child with a naive charm.
Unsuspecting or credulous: “Students, often bright but naive, bet and lose substantial sums of money on sporting events” (Tim Layden).
Showing or characterized by a lack of sophistication and critical judgment: “this extravagance of metaphors, with its naive bombast” (H.L. Mencken).

Not previously subjected to experiments: testing naive mice.
Not having previously taken or received a particular drug: persons naive to marijuana.

n.
One who is artless, credulous, or uncritical.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[French naïve, feminine of naïf, from Old French naif, natural, native, from Latin ntvus, native, rustic, from ntus, past participle of nsc, to be born. See gen- in Indo-European Roots.]

di·er·e·sis or di·aer·e·sis ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-r-ss)
n. pl. di·er·e·ses (-sz)
Linguistics.
A mark ( ¨ ) placed over the second of two adjacent vowels to indicate that they are to be pronounced as separate sounds rather than a diphthong, as in naïve.
A mark ( ¨ ) placed over a vowel, such as the final vowel in Brontë, to indicate that the vowel is not silent.

It's Über... jeez..

It can be easy accomplished in Mac OS X and Linux, In Windows you'll have to use the character map.

Do you really want your excuse to be "it's not on my keyboard," when you tell a spanish guy that:

¡Está un ano bonito! (It's a beautiful anus.)

or did you really mean:

¡Está un año bonito! (It's a beatiful year.)

I think she should come home after school, and be home every night for dinner, maybe getting an exception once a week. Weekends, free.

My wife thinks that since she has no responsibilities, let's not make any up. She's basically good (aren't they all), and she'll have plenty of time to be serious about life.

I think that people have lost sight of what being a teen is about. It's not about a non-stop party, it's about preparing for adulthood.

What do you all think (other than the district is nuts to have a 3 hour school day for kids who have already fallen behind). And let me remind you, it's always easier said than done!

Your opener was jam-packed, Steve. Sorry I missed it earlier. If an extra opinion helps, I think you're right (although you should never, never say that to your wife smile.gif ). Resumelady and Bordercollie had some really good points. I guess some of this is moot being that your fine young lady now has a job, but we really can't abdicate parental responsibility to teens. They are not fully developed, and despite our best efforts and work for many, many years, they are not able to make the best decisions for themselves . . . yet -- it won't be long, don't rush it.

I have two older children, and from what I've learned since high school, the times I left them to their own decision-making often were the times that they were actually doing troublesome things. I wish I'd kept closer watch, though it didn't kill either one.

Just wondering, does the concept of "getting left back" and repeating a grade exist in the California school system?

California law does not allow for "social promotion" anymore. This is a relatively recent change (5 or so years ago). If you don't pass math and English, you don't move on to the next grade, or kids can sometimes correct those failing scores in summer school and then move on the next year.

Thanks Tess.

Though if you have a program that allows people to do half the work for half the credit, that's 50% in my mind which equates to no pass in NY. Maybe I just don't have a full understanding as to how long a regular CA H.S. senior goes to class...

Is it 8:00am to 2:30pm for regular CA H.S. senior? If that's the benchmark, and there is an alternate system that's 3hrs where you can get half the credit for half the work, under what circumstances would someone be "left back" as opposed to just moving into an alterate system?

I thought NY had crazy rules until I moved out here....

What happens if the alternate system doesn't work out?

Is there an alternate, alternate system...

The alternate, alternate would go from 3hrs, no homework to 1.5hrs, no homework, and a free trip. smile.gif
