here is a good website to help familiarize yourself with common snakes found in Ca.

http://www.californi...sid/common.html

what truly freaks me out is how many varieties of colors that each type of snake can have.

Itmakes me uncomfortable in my ability to quickly and accurately identify a species

Saw a huge gopher snake on a golf course the other day. He went all the way across the cart path. I locked up the brakes to avoid hitting him and almost got rear ended by the guy behind me. I sure didn't want to hit him or add one more ruined golf cart to my record.

I also was doing a job a while back and had the neighbors cleaning lady come running over. There was a very large Racer coiled on the front porch and she was terrified. I took a picture and found a reptile rescue (who knew?) . I sent him the picture and he became very excited and rushed right over to pick it up. It was a beauty in color, and he said that people paid a lot to have them as pets (ick). He said it may have even been someone's pet that got out.

Had a pretty good sized rattler go through our boat camp spot 2 years ago...

I don't bother them, and they seem to not bother me.

au contrare.  there are no BAD snakes.  there are dangerous snakes, helpful snakes, harmless snakes, etc.

rattlesnakes are the ONLY dangerous snake in our region.  don't kill the others.  that's just not right.  and only kill rattlesnakes if they are in your yard.  otherwise, let them be.
