Just saw an update on the news that Wise Buys is closing all three locations. Didn't seem to last long here in Folsom.

Never stepped foot in the place, don't know that I'll miss it but either people are tired of dollar type stores or the economy is still so bad that even a cheapo store can't make it?

Never heard if it. What / where was it?

I actually want to go to a dollar store; I need to buy a bunch of cheap 2x4 self adhesive labels.

Think it was the old Staples (or was it Office Max??) in the Walmart shopping center.

Wow, that didn't last long. I never went in there either.
Before that space was an OfficeMax, I think it was a Payless Drugstore. I think Walmart just takes away too much of the discount business for something like that to make it there.

Walked through the place once and it is just a bunch of random cheap overstock crap that was likely left on the shelf at some other store.

I agree. The one thing that may have been "exciting" were the chais lounge chairs from the Bellagio or Venetian when WB started opening in this region.

Oh Dude, but they are creating jobs! Crappy jobs to go with their crappy products! I said this would close before and everyone else just said to quit being negative. Hello, these businesses still don't get the point that you have to have quality, not just quantity.
Also, look how the corporation operates. It's a dinosaur. While it's head is being chopped off, it's tale is still thinking it's alive. They opened the Folsom store when they knew the market couldn't support it. Was it mismanagement or was it b/c the store could get cash tax break incentives to open here even though they knew they were going to close these stores? Makes you wonder. You see this all the time with stores. They open when they are in bankruptcy and then end up closing like Good Guys. What a joke.
The recession was a taste of what's coming. It's going to get worse before better. Also have you been into the new remodeled Walmart, gross. The new floor is torn in many areas, the doors were put in backwards and they aren't going to change them b/c the carts were also put on the incorrect side and some of the workers are so shot out they look like they just came from an episode of Cops. So much for bringing high paying jobs to Folsom.

Yep, agree about quality. It was because they sold junk and we already have a slightly better quality junk store called Tuesday Morning and a lesser quality junk store called the Dollar store. The used version of it all can be found at Good Will.

I disagree with your negative doom and gloom outlook and I don't sit up high on a throne like you do, I think Walmart is fine and I'm not a racist so I think the people who shop there are a-ok.

Let me ask you this all knowing and all seeing one, tell me what business YOU could open that would bring in high paying jobs? Not everyone can make six figures ya know - well except all those state workers, I think even the janitor at the Capital makes 130k.

So are jobs only for people who look like they don't need them? Would you rather they be on the streets asking you for a handout? Maybe that makes you feel better about where you're at in this economy.

Profiting from death? Lawsuit filed in Wal-Mart life insurance case
Houston Chronicle ^ | April 15, 2002 | L.M. SIXEL

Posted on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 3:15:37 AM by ValerieUSA

Jane Sims always knew her husband was a valuable employee to Wal-Mart. She just didn't know how valuable. Sims discovered recently that Wal-Mart, the company her husband, Douglas, worked for before he died, had taken out a life insurance policy in his name. When Douglas Sims died in 1998 of a sudden heart attack, Wal-Mart received about $64,000. She got nothing from that policy.
"I never dreamed that they could profit from my husband's death," said Sims, whose husband worked in receiving at Wal-Mart's distribution center in Plainview for 11 years.
THIS IS JUST ONE CASE, lots more they have profited off of and never told the employee's family or given them the payouts.
Dude, when you know better, you do better. Perhaps you will shop with a moral compass if you can afford to. Walmart's prices are cheap for a reason. Many of their employees qualify for food stamps.
Costco is a great example of a store that is better than most in Folsom. Their retail model actually attracts higher quality workers and the pay and benefits are more of a living wage than most retail stores.
Folsom is like any other suburb or small city. Desperate for dollars they sell themselves faster than a crack addict needing their next hit. They let any business come in that might give them some tax dollars. Not the best move. I can't explain economics to you, but you and I both know jobs with higher skilled workers make a better city vs the countless "massage" shops, mexican taquerias, donut shops, and cheap retail stores that Folsom has been busy granting licenses to lately.
I like Folsom enough. Waiting for the kiddos to graduate, but any city is a Folsom. Cities face the challenge of making money to pay for its services. Perhaps you want Folsom to be more like Rancho and have casinos and strip clubs to pay for our schools etc. Perhaps medicinal marijuana stores and more hookah bars will make this city great. You know, you can criticize something you like, and still want to live here. Folsom has great qualities, but it needs to do more to attract higher income jobs to come here.

Wal Mart didn't PROFIT from his death! Wal Mart took out a " Key Person" Life insurance policy, to pay Walmart in the event of having a Key Person die. There are tremendous costs associated with hiring and training new employees, so this policy reimburses the company for those costs.

Insurance companies are in Business to make money, so the rates Wal Mart are paying for these Key Person polices must be more that the benefits that are being paid out! How often do you see Insurance companies going out of business?

I suspect the man had to at some point AGREE to have this policy taken out on him by Walmart. (I can't write a policy on you without you knowing about it). I also suspect that the man had opportunities to purchase life insurance through a group plan through Wal Mart and didn't choose to do that. Group plans typically don't require underwriting, so there isn't any need to qualify.

If Wal Mart bought the policy and the man agreed to them doing this and Wal Mart paid the premiums, why should the Wife expect any benefit? If the Wife wanted the beneift she should have bought and paid for the Policy!

This is just another example on how society has become twisted into thinking there are free lunches! Its always easier to just bash others without looking at things in a responsible manner!

You are so WRONG. This has happened to thousands of employees and they weren't EXECUTIVES! They were low paid clerks etc and it's bs. You can Google many other cases and you are also INCORRECT about them having the option to purchase life insurance. MAYBE if the person was healthy had no prior health issues and were young enough, they could get a basic policy. However, Walmart is able to qualify them with even the poorest of health with no PHYSICAL. This is the irony. Walmart can cover their workers without telling them, without a health exam and without any restrictions on who they covered. RESEARCH a little more you capitalistic, profit at all costs person.

ALSO,Walmart has gotten into moral issues before by providing the WORST medical coverage and their employees dying from lack of coverage that they thought they had to battle cancer. THen, the family finds out they have an $80,000 policy on her life after she dies of a cancer that maybe could have been cured if she had the proper treatment.

YOU CAN JUSTIFY anything, can't you? When you die you think that's the end and it didn't matter who got screwed over, but you are wrong and it does matter how you treat others. I guess you never knew anyone or had the experience of working for one of these companies, but they are horrible when it comes to worker benefits. Not only do they exploit the working poor, they exploit their suppliers, their customers and the environment frequently.
It's sad that you would think it's okay to insure anyone without their knowledge/permission. Also, these same employees that are covered, many times can't even get the same coverage themselves even if they wanted it. So when they die, Walmart profits off their death. Disgusting!!!!!!!
Americans, don't just come in one color or race.
