A heads up for everyone

I found a dead bird at the corner of Greenbush and Silberhorn, a couple of blocks from the Parkways.

I had it tested and it was positive for the West Nile Virus.

Take precautions.

Thanks for the post. I deleted one of them. They only need to be posted in one
section. Thanks.

protect yourself from mosquitos. Especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitos are most active. wear long sleeve shirts and pants and put repellant on exposed skin. make sure you close your doors and windows and that your screens are in good repair. remove standing water and other places mosquitos can breed.

Was it a Magpie? It seems they were the most susceptible last time West Nile was around.

We have plenty of crows. One was making a racket in our yard just yesterday.

Thank you for posting this information.

I’ve been concerned West Nile would show up around here.

Everybody remember to NEVER pick up a dead bird with bare hands!
AND, please call Vector Control when you find one.

I wanted to post the number, but can’t seem to find it right now. Anyone have it?

Like Ducky said, what kind of bird was it and
where did you take it to get it checked out?

I found a dead bird in my back yard last year and
made a call and they just said to put it in a plastic
bag and put it in the trash. They didn't even want
to check it. It was a Finch.

Same here. They just said to throw it away.

Here is a Web site if you want to fill out an online form. (There's a number to call for dead squirrels, too.)
westnile.ca.gov/report_wnv.php. The Web site with info is just westnile.ca.gov.

It looks like there are way more dead birds this year than last - 890 for the whole state - Three hundred something of them are from Sacramento County.

Like 4thgen said, I'd be more worried about mosquitos. The advice about not touching dead birds with bare hands is good for many reasons.

I think it is called a Lesser Goldfinch, it is a small bird not your typical crow.

From what I have read, if the report comes from a known infested area they will tell you to put it into a garbage bag and into your garbage container.

There is a website to report dead birds (Google is your friend :) ), I called and they picked it up next day.

They do advise how to pick up the bird (not with your bare hands) and how to bag it.

I was looking at their website and their reports, there are only about 3 dead birds reports from Folsom. No area specified, so maybe this is a new area that is getting infected

The Lesser Goldfinch is yellow and black. Nice looking little bird. I
have a lot of them coming to my feeders.

If you find a dead bird, get a plastic bag and turn it wrong side out,
reach inside the bag and pick up the bird and then pull the bag up and
close it. You don't need to touch the bird. Or just wear plastic gloves
and put it in a bag.
