I have never heard of a retaining wall holding back a wetland,. I wonder if it was part of the old ditch that used to bring Folsom water. Great photos, by the way.

The Natomas Ditch actually ran well east of the school.  Here is a current Google Map overlayed with a 1948 topo map.  The green line is the wall as recorded with my GPS.

Here is the topo map only for clarity.

that's great work with the overlay.  I see the wall was very close to a tree-covered hillside historically.  I am wondering if its a remnant of the dam construction in the 1940s.

That's marsh like on the other side of the lake.

Thanks. The wall has the same aggregate construction as the old Salmon Falls Bridge as posted by Chris V earlier in the thread, so I would assume it is much older than 1940.

I couldn't sit at home any longer, so I ventured up to Brown's Ravine today and took some shots.  There were tons of people.  When I took those shots in 2009, I think there were only 2 other people besides me and my wife.  I hope these increased visitors are patronizing our local businesses.

Some shots:

Does anybody have a clue on what year this beer can was from?

My neighbor told me she saw a bunch of little kids with Tupperware containers leaving with artifacts,,we all know to display things we've found on stumps,,etc, right? I've been bothered by this thought of kids taking things out..

no, those are mining tailings.  just conferred with the archaeologists in our office.  the retaining wall is slightly off in this GIS layer.  It actually held back the road in that area and was very likely related to the dam construction effort in the 1940s.  Also, that last photo by Chris V is a great one showing the actual area known as Salmon Falls.  That is the falls, not the area upstream that we associated with it.

Even if it were just those freshwater clam shells?

Seriously, I don't understand why anyone would bring anything home just to put it on a shelf.  Leave it be so others can re-discover it..

I know that those sites are protected, so artifacts from those sites are protected. Freshwater clam shells, not so much! :)

We all need to plan outdoor barbecues & birthday parties to entice the rain.   I'd say wash your car or windows, but that would be counterproductive.  Even though we are allowed two days a week for landscape watering, only one day a week is sufficient.  Wish the commercial centers in Folsom would do the same (looking at you property management for Ruchi, Dollar Tree, McDonald's, etc.)

They are reducing the flow from the dam already.  Saw a sandbar when crossing Howe Avenue this weekend that only happens when they reduce the flow.
