I tried the place twice and I wasn't impressed. I had a coupon from the highschool and the manager gave me a very difficult time when I wanted to use it. I was with my parents and I haven't been back since. That was probably two or three years ago too! There are better Mexican food places where my parents live in the Central Valley.
I'll be interested in trying the taqueria going in . . . sometimes small business have better food.
My experiences at Casa Ramos weren't bad, but they weren't stand outs either. You would think Mexican food would be easy to nail, but most don't get it right.
My wife's late grandmother was a wonderful lady and magical in the kitchen. Her version of staples such as rice, beans, and salsas were better than any I've had in restaurants. Come to think of it, those are the main things I judge a Mexican restaurant on.
Either they fail on the beans (dry or pasty or over-salted or greasy), or the rice (orange, flavorless, dry), salsas (tasting like ketchup, or having no heat, or having wayyyy too much heat). No one seems to get it all right.
So, the one that has consistently delivered IMO, is La Fiesta. I do like Q'bole's green rice, and at Hacienda, I ask for the regular (ketchup) and super hot salsas and mix them together.
My wife comes pretty close, but we do mostly low-fat or fat free stuff, and they just don't have that authenticity.
I'm really looking forward to Sutter Street Taqueria. It will be great to have a casual eatery like that on the street. I hope they're open late, too.
